When a question suggests shopping intent, ChatGPT can show product options with images, details and links to the sites that sell them. OpenAI says a product appears when ChatGPT judges it relevant to the shopper’s intent and context, and that product results are not ads. The purchase itself finishes on the merchant’s own site or app.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT shows products it judges relevant to the shopper’s intent and context.
- Prices, descriptions, labels and review summaries come from third party providers or from ChatGPT itself, and OpenAI does not verify reviews.
- Shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the United States, and the purchase finishes on the merchant’s own site or app.
- Stores on Shopify and Etsy are already integrated, and other merchants can apply to share a product feed.
How does ChatGPT shopping work?
OpenAI’s help page on shopping describes what ChatGPT weighs. It reads the shopper’s question and context, including memory and custom instructions. It uses structured metadata from first party and third party providers, such as price and product description. Other third party content counts. So does the answer ChatGPT drafted before any new search, and so do OpenAI’s safety standards and product policies.
What the shopper asks changes the weights. If the question names a budget, OpenAI says ChatGPT focuses more on price. Not every product makes the list, and OpenAI adds, with some understatement, that “there are a lot of dog costumes out there.”
We describe the process in four steps. A buyer’s sentence turns into constraints such as budget, use case, size and material. ChatGPT gathers candidate products from search results and product data, compares their attributes against those constraints, and names a short list with reasons.
What can ChatGPT read on my product page?
OpenAI names its inputs. It does not say how its crawler treats text inside images or text that a script draws after the page loads. I would not rely on either for a fact that decides a sale. A size that appears only in a chart image, or a material the photo implies, gives the comparison nothing to read. Claims belong in fields rather than in prose for the same reason.
Labels deserve a separate note. OpenAI says labels such as Budget-friendly are generated by ChatGPT and are not verified statements. A label is ChatGPT’s summary of what it read on your page, so fix a wrong label by fixing the information behind it.
Can the shopper buy inside ChatGPT?
The standard flow sends the shopper to the merchant. OpenAI’s merchant FAQ, read on September 26, 2026, says OpenAI is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout. Shoppers discover and compare products in ChatGPT and complete the purchase on the merchant’s own website or app.
Two OpenAI pages disagree on this detail. The shopping help page was marked as updated 29 days before I read it. It still says ChatGPT may show an Instant Checkout option for some eligible products and merchants. We follow the merchant FAQ, since it is the page OpenAI writes for sellers. Either way, a wrong price or stock status sends the shopper to a page that does not match what ChatGPT showed.
Agents that buy on a shopper’s behalf are a separate question from ChatGPT shopping, and whether an agent can buy from your store explains how to check yours.
Product data for ChatGPT shopping, checked in five steps
The useful test starts from a real sentence, since ChatGPT compares the shopper’s words with what your product page states. Pick a product you want recommended and run these steps on its page.
- Write the sentence a buyer would type for this product, and list every constraint in it, such as the budget, the use case, the size and the material.
- Open the product page and find each constraint stated as text. A size that only appears in an image, or a material the photo implies, counts as missing.
- View the page source and search for the Product structured data. The price and the stock status in its offer should match what the page shows a shopper today.
- Compare the product name in the structured data with the heading on the page, and correct any that differ.
- Ask ChatGPT the same sentence and note which constraints the named products state that yours does not. Those gaps are your edit list.
We ran step 3 on our own store on September 26, 2026. The offer in the structured data of our Full Assessment and Roadmap page carried the price, the currency and the stock status, and all three matched the page. Entity Integrity is our metric for whether a brand and its product facts are stated consistently. In our study of 216 Shopify storefronts (June 2026), 72 percent failed it, which means they earned less than half its points. Listed versus recommended product schema covers the fields beyond price and stock.
Common questions
How do merchants get their products into ChatGPT shopping?
Merchants can apply to share a product feed through OpenAI’s merchant page. Merchants who have already applied are on a waitlist while OpenAI builds a self serve merchant platform. A store that sells through Shopify or Etsy needs no application, since OpenAI says those catalogs are already integrated. OpenAI’s shopping help page adds that Shopify product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. Shopping in ChatGPT is live for users in the United States.
Do I need a product feed if ChatGPT already crawls my site?
A feed is not required, according to OpenAI’s merchant FAQ, but it gives you more control over how your products appear. Without one, ChatGPT relies on what it can crawl and on product data from first party and third party providers. With one, you send prices, availability, images and details yourself. OpenAI says most merchants start with a feed and describes a ChatGPT app as optional, best suited to larger merchants.
Why is the price in ChatGPT shopping different from my website?
The price in ChatGPT comes from third party providers, and OpenAI says a merchant’s price or shipping change can take a while to show up. The price in the first response usually belongs to the first merchant listed, which may not be the lowest. The product detail view highlights the lowest price ChatGPT knows of, sometimes with a Best price label. Keep the price on your page and in your structured data current, and sync a feed often if you share one. You can report a wrong price through the menu on the product.
How does ChatGPT rank merchants that sell the same product?
OpenAI says the list of merchants comes from merchant and product data supplied by third party providers or by the merchants themselves. It ranks merchants on factors such as availability, price, quality and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller of the item. OpenAI expects to personalize these rankings more over time, and it publishes no weights. If you make what you sell, say so plainly and keep stock and price current.
Where do ChatGPT shopping labels and review summaries come from?
ChatGPT writes them. OpenAI says ChatGPT generates labels such as Budget-friendly or Most popular from the information the model has, which may include third party data. It also says they are not guarantees or verified statements. Review summaries are model generated from reviews on public websites, and OpenAI does not verify reviews or ratings. A merchant cannot set these labels. You control the inputs OpenAI names, which are accurate product information and real reviews on public sites.
Is ChatGPT shopping available outside the United States?
OpenAI’s merchant page names only the United States. On September 26, 2026 it said shopping is live in the U.S. and will expand to additional regions over time. If you sell mainly outside the United States, ordinary ChatGPT search matters more to you today than the shopping carousel. That route depends on OAI-SearchBot, and how to get your website to show up in ChatGPT explains it.
Does OpenAI charge merchants fees on sales from ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s merchant page says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. Shoppers go to the merchant’s own site or app by default, so the merchant keeps checkout, payments and fulfillment. The page does not describe a charge for sharing a product feed. Advertising in ChatGPT is separate and paid, with its own sign up at ads.openai.com, and OpenAI says product results are not ads.
What product data should I check for ChatGPT shopping?
Check the facts a buyer filters on, such as price, stock status, size, material and use case. Each one should appear as text on the product page, and the price and stock status in your structured data should match what the page shows. OpenAI says ChatGPT considers structured metadata such as price and product description. In our study of 216 Shopify storefronts in June 2026, 72 percent failed Entity Integrity, which means they earned less than half its points. That metric checks whether a brand and its product facts are stated consistently.
This article rests on OpenAI’s help pages Shopping with ChatGPT Search and Ads in ChatGPT, its merchant page Power product discovery in ChatGPT and its Overview of OpenAI crawlers. I read each of them on September 26, 2026. The study figure comes from The State of AI Visibility 2026 (216 Shopify storefronts, scored June 28, 2026), and the check of our own product page ran on September 26, 2026.
