How do I connect GA4, Search Console and Merchant Center to Shopify, and which numbers show my visibility?

Search Console connects with a verification tag in your theme and your sitemap. GA4 and Merchant Center connect through Shopify's Google & YouTube sales channel, signed in with a Google account your business owns. Once they are connected, read 3 numbers each month: AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions in Search Console, AI Assistant sessions in GA4, and unpaid product impressions in Merchant Center.

By Margareta Petrovic, CISA, CISSP, founder of Visibility Mesh. Our team checked every menu name on this page against Shopify's and Google's help pages on October 5, 2026.

On May 23, 2024, a merchant asked on the Shopify Community how to connect Google Ads, Analytics, Merchant Center and Search Console. Since then, Google has added AI reporting to 2 of those tools. GA4 added an AI Assistant channel on May 13, 2026. Search Console gave every website a Generative AI report on August 31, 2026. The 2024 answers still work for connecting the accounts, but they say nothing about either report, since neither existed then.

This guide covers the connections and the 3 numbers, all in your own accounts. We leave Google Ads out on purpose. Google Ads data shows paid traffic, and this guide is about the visits nobody paid for.

Who should own the accounts before I connect anything?

Decide this first. It is hard to undo later. Shopify links GA4 and Merchant Center through the Google account you sign in with. Shopify's help pages say that account needs the Editor role on the GA4 property. It also needs admin access on the Merchant Center account.

We recommend a Google account that belongs to the business, not to one person, so access stays with the company when someone leaves. Everyone else gets added as a user with the smallest role that does their job. Security teams call this least privilege, and it costs nothing to set up.

How do I connect Search Console to my Shopify store?

Shopify's help page uses the HTML tag method. In Search Console, add a URL prefix property for your main domain and choose HTML tag. Copy the whole meta tag.

In Shopify, duplicate your live theme so you work on a copy. Open the copy's code and paste the tag just below the opening head tag in theme.liquid. Publish the copy and click Verify in Search Console. If Google shows an error, Shopify says to wait 15 minutes and try again.

Your sitemap comes next. Shopify builds it for you at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, with your products, collections, pages, blog posts and images. In Search Console, open Indexing and then Sitemaps. Type sitemap.xml under Add a new sitemap and click Submit. Google cannot read the sitemap of a password protected store, so remove the password first.

How do I connect GA4 to Shopify?

You need a GA4 property with a web data stream, so create one or use the one you have. Install the Google & YouTube sales channel in Shopify and connect that property there. Shopify tracks certain ecommerce events for you, such as product views, add to cart and purchases. GA4 does not work while the store is password protected.

Where your cookie banner is active, Shopify collects analytics data only after the visitor consents. GA4 therefore counts fewer visits than the store receives, so read it for the direction of traffic and not for exact totals.

How do I connect Merchant Center to Shopify?

Merchant Center uses the same Google & YouTube channel. Sign in with the business Google account and select or create a Merchant Center account. Google asks for a phone verification. You then set shipping and choose where product titles and descriptions come from.

Shopify's help page lists these requirements, and the store has to meet them before products sync to Google.

  • Remove the store password and connect a working payment provider.
  • Put a Refund Policy and Terms of Service in the footer menu.
  • Show at least one contact method on a page customers can see.
  • Verify your primary domain in Merchant Center, and make sure no other Merchant Center account claims it.
  • Give each product a GTIN in the variant's barcode field, or a brand and an MPN. Add a Google product category too, and on apparel add age group, gender, color and size.

Shopify says the first sync can take up to 24 hours. Google reviews new products in 3 to 5 business days. A few products often come back with issues, so fix those before you read any visibility number.

Which 3 numbers show my visibility?

On a Shopify store, the 3 numbers that show visibility in Google's own tools are AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions in Search Console, AI Assistant sessions in GA4, and unpaid product impressions in Merchant Center. Read them once a month, on the same day.

Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode

The Generative AI performance report in Search Console counts how often a link to your site appeared in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It splits them by page, country, date and device. It shows no clicks and no queries. Those clicks sit in the ordinary Performance report under the Web search type, mixed with every other Google click.

Look at which pages appear. A key product page missing from this report has not appeared in AI Overviews or AI Mode, by Google's own count. Our guide to the Generative AI report walks through every tab.

Sessions in the GA4 AI Assistant channel

Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. The table groups sessions by channel. The AI Assistant channel covers visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot, Grok and similar sources. Visits from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode stay in Organic Search, so read those 2 rows side by side. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 shows how to catch assistants that still land under Referral.

Unpaid product impressions in Merchant Center

In Merchant Center, open Analytics and then Products, and set the Traffic filter to Organic. Impressions count how often Google showed your products. Clicks count the visits to your product pages that followed.

Then open Products and the Needs attention tab. A product marked Not approved cannot appear at all. A product marked Limited appears in fewer places. When impressions look low, check that tab first.

What these numbers cannot tell you

All 3 numbers report what already happened. None of them says why a page is missing. Search Console covers Google only. GA4 misses visitors who decline consent and visits whose referrer does not come through, and Merchant Center tracks products, not articles.

The cause is often one step earlier, in what a crawler receives when it requests the page. Our free scan reads that page the way an AI crawler does. It needs no card and no login to any of your Google accounts, and it lists what to fix on each page it reads.

What to do this week

You can do every step yourself, in your own accounts.

  1. Choose the business Google account that will own all 3 tools. Write down who else has access and with which role.
  2. Duplicate your theme and add the Search Console tag to theme.liquid in the copy. Publish it, verify, and submit sitemap.xml.
  3. Create or confirm a GA4 property with a web data stream, and connect it in the Google & YouTube channel.
  4. Connect Merchant Center in the same channel and fix every store requirement it flags.
  5. A week later, open the Needs attention tab and fix the products marked Not approved.
  6. Write down the 3 numbers with the date in one sheet.
  7. Read them again on the same day next month.

When does it make sense to hire help?

The harder case is a store where everything is connected, the products are approved, and the numbers still sit near zero. In that case our team looks at the pages themselves, starting with whether AI crawlers are allowed in and whether the content reaches them without JavaScript.

Foundation covers that work on Shopify and WordPress, for $3,000. We fix crawler access, rendering, sitemaps, canonicals and broken or duplicate markup at the template level. You approve every change, and you receive a log of each change and a new scan at the same depth as the first one.

Questions owners ask

Is it free to connect GA4, Search Console and Merchant Center to Shopify?

Google charges no fee for Search Console, the standard version of GA4 or a Merchant Center account. Search Console connects with a tag in your theme. GA4 and Merchant Center connect through Shopify's Google & YouTube sales channel. Google Ads is a separate, paid product, and no step in this guide needs it.

Do I need Merchant Center if I do not run Google Ads?

You need it if you sell products. Merchant Center is how your product data reaches Google, and Google says its Shopping Graph can power AI features such as buying guidance and product recommendations. You do not need Google Ads, and Merchant Center still reports your unpaid product impressions under the Organic traffic filter.

Where do visits from Google AI Overviews show up in GA4?

They show up in Organic Search. Google's AI Assistant channel covers sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok, and it leaves AI Overviews and AI Mode in Organic Search. The Search Console Generative AI report shows the impressions from Google's AI features.

Why does GA4 show fewer visits than I expected?

Where your cookie banner is active, Shopify collects analytics data only after the visitor consents. Visitors who decline are not counted, so session totals come out lower. Compare GA4 with itself month over month rather than with another tool.

Why can I not see the Generative AI report in Search Console?

Google lists 2 possible reasons. The site may have too few impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It may also be excluded from Search generative AI features in the property settings, so check that setting on your property and on any parent property.

How long does Merchant Center take to approve my products?

Shopify says the first sync can take up to 24 hours. Google then reviews new products, which usually takes 3 to 5 business days. After that, check the Needs attention tab and fix the products marked Not approved first.

Does Visibility Mesh connect to my Google accounts?

Visibility Mesh never connects to your Google accounts. Our scan reads your pages from the outside, the way an AI crawler receives them, and it needs no card and no login. Your Google accounts and the data in them stay under your control.

Find out why a page never shows up

Google's tools do not say why a key page never shows up in them. The free scan reads that page the way an AI crawler receives it. You get a 0 to 100 score and a fix list in priority order, and you need no card.

If you would rather have our team fix the template issues, ask us for a quote. A person at Visibility Mesh reads your site and replies within 1 business day. On Shopify or WordPress, Foundation fixes crawler access, rendering, sitemaps and markup in about 2 to 3 weeks once we have access.
