Shopify sends products to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini through its agentic storefronts, but only for stores and products that meet its requirements, and nothing in the admin warns you when yours do not. The usual causes are a missing store policy, supplemental terms nobody accepted, no sales to the United States, and products that fail Shopify Catalog's rules or, for Google, Merchant Center's. You can check every one of them yourself in one sitting.
Shopify's help pages put most of the hard requirements in your store policies and legal terms. A store without a Return and refund policy cannot use the ChatGPT channel at all. We read each Shopify page cited below on October 5, 2026.
What agentic storefronts are
Agentic storefronts let shoppers find and buy your products inside AI channels. Shopify names ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. It says the feature is active by default for eligible stores.
Your products reach those channels through Shopify Catalog. Google's channel also reads your Google Merchant Center account.
The channels sell in different ways. ChatGPT is a discovery channel, so the shopper pays on your own checkout. Google, Copilot and Meta can also offer a direct checkout inside the conversation.
The 4 requirements that leave a whole store out
Shopify's pages for ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode list the same core rules. If you miss one, the whole store drops out of that channel.
- You need a Terms of service, a Privacy policy and a Return and refund policy, completed under Settings, then Policies.
- Someone must read and agree to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- Your store must sell to United States customers. For ChatGPT, the store itself can be based elsewhere. For Google AI Mode and Gemini, it must also be based in the United States.
- Your products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog, which has its own rules further down.
The third rule matters most for owners outside the United States. A store in Europe that sells only to customers in its own country is not eligible for ChatGPT through Shopify.
None of these gaps produces an error. The store keeps selling on its own site, and the AI channels never receive its products. No email arrives to tell you, so the only way to find out is to check.
What being left out costs you
Shopify does not publish how many orders come through these channels. We will not guess a number for your store, and we would treat any figure offered without a source with caution.
When a shopper asks ChatGPT for something you sell, the assistant picks from the products Shopify Catalog sent it, and an ineligible store sent none.
Shopify shows a listing quality indicator for each product under Sales channels, then Agentic. One of its signals is "Shop policy completeness", which checks that your shipping, returns and other store policies are present. Shopify says policies signal a legitimate store and help AI channels recommend its products with confidence. A store with no Shipping policy can still be eligible for ChatGPT, and the listing quality of every product it sells drops.
The product data problems that hide single products
A store can be eligible while some of its products are not. Shopify Catalog needs a title, at least 1 image and a price above zero on every product. Each product must be published to your online store, or to a headless channel, with a URL Shopify can identify. It cannot be Unlisted or hidden from search engines, and it cannot carry mature content.
The store must be on the Starter plan or higher. It also cannot be in private mode, which means the password page many new stores keep for months.
Shopify reviews account standing over time as well. It asks owners to verify their email and turn on two step authentication. It also looks for genuine sales, a low chargeback rate and Shopify invoices paid on time.
These 4 details are easier to miss than the rules above:
- A free sample priced at zero never enters Shopify Catalog.
- An old SEO app may have hidden a product from search engines. Shopify Catalog then treats it as hidden too, and Shopify names the seo.hidden metafield as one of the ways products stay out.
- Products that shoppers see only after logging in count as wholesale products. Agentic storefronts sell only direct to consumers, so Shopify leaves them out.
- Some themes keep titles or categories in metafields. Shopify Catalog may then read the wrong field, and Shopify offers Shopify Catalog Mapping for that case.
Google adds one more layer for AI Mode and Gemini. You need a valid Merchant Center account with your products in it. Shopify suggests the Google and YouTube sales channel, with product and shipping sync switched on. In Merchant Center, "Not approved" means an error keeps the product off Google. "Limited" means it shows only in some places.
Robots.txt does not control Shopify Catalog
Your products reach AI assistants in two ways. Shopify Catalog sends a feed to the channels you switched on, and AI crawlers read your store on the open web. An auditor would test these as two separate controls, and our team tests them separately on a store too.
Shopify says a robots.txt block on AI crawlers affects only the open web. Shopify Catalog keeps sending your products to the channels you switched on. Catalog settings have no say over crawling either, so ChatGPT can still find your pages after you turn Catalog access off.
For ChatGPT search to read your pages, robots.txt has to let OpenAI's search crawler in. Our guide to how ChatGPT search works covers that step by step.
How to check your store this week
You can work through these steps on your own, since each one takes a few minutes and none needs an app.
- Under Settings, then Policies, make sure all 3 required policies contain your own text. Add a Shipping policy while you are there.
- Under Sales channels, then Agentic, note which channels are on.
- Read the supplemental terms. If you never agreed to them, follow what the Agentic section asks you to do.
- In your market settings, confirm you sell to buyers in the United States.
- Type your best seller's name into the search preview in the Agentic section and look at its listing quality.
- Check your 5 best sellers for a title, an image, a price above zero, Active status and the Online Store channel.
- Turn on two step authentication, and take the store off its password page once it is ready to sell.
- If you sell through Google, read the Status column under Products in Merchant Center, then work through the Needs attention tab.
Shopify says its search preview gives a direction rather than an exact prediction, since each AI channel reorders results with its own logic. The preview is still a quick way to spot listings with thin data.
When it makes sense to hire help
The policies and the market setting are yours to fix, and most owners finish them in an afternoon. The supplemental terms are a legal agreement, so read and accept them yourself rather than through a freelancer.
Help makes sense when the problem sits in the theme or the data. Product facts may live in metafields that Shopify Catalog cannot map. The theme and an app may both print product markup. A robots.txt.liquid edit may shut out the crawlers you wanted. Hundreds of Merchant Center disapprovals belong on that list too.
Our Foundation setup fixes the open web side on Shopify. We open the store to the crawlers you choose, and we fix rendering, sitemaps and canonicals. We also remove broken or duplicate markup in the template itself, so one fix reaches every page built from it. On Shopify we do all of this in a copy of your theme.
Questions owners ask
Is ChatGPT shopping switched on for my Shopify store automatically?
Shopify says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. Eligible means the 3 policies are complete, the supplemental terms are accepted and the store sells into the United States. The products must also meet the Shopify Catalog rules. Check Sales channels, then Agentic, to see which channels are on.
Can a store outside the United States sell on ChatGPT through Shopify?
A store outside the United States can sell on ChatGPT if it sells to United States customers. Shopify's ChatGPT page says the store can be based elsewhere. Google AI Mode and Gemini are stricter, since the store must also be based in the United States.
I blocked AI crawlers in robots.txt. Did that remove my products from ChatGPT shopping?
A robots.txt block does not take your products out of ChatGPT shopping. Shopify says it affects only discovery on the open web. Shopify Catalog still sends your products to the channels you switched on. Your pages may still be missing from ChatGPT search answers, which is a separate question.
Do I pay Shopify a fee to sell in ChatGPT?
Shopify's ChatGPT page says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT. You pay only your standard payment processing fees.
How do I hide one product from AI channels?
Shopify says you can set the product to Unlisted or use the seo.hidden metafield. Both also hide the product from Google, your sitemap and your own store search. Use them only for products you want hidden everywhere.
How long does it take for my products to appear after I fix the problem?
Shopify does not publish a time, and it says eligibility is reviewed over time. Google says a Merchant Center review for Shopping ads may take 3 to 5 business days. Check the search preview a week after your fix, and write down the date.
Why does a product with a long description still rank low in the preview?
Shopify's listing quality covers your description, images, verified reviews, variants and store policies. Shopify also says relevance depends on signals such as popularity and brand recognition. A store builds those over time, and we would not expect a longer description alone to move them.
Check what your Shopify admin cannot show you
The Agentic section in your admin reports on Shopify Catalog only. The free scan checks whether AI crawlers can reach your store on the open web, and it reads the structured data and text of 5 key pages. When crawler access or theme markup is the cause, Foundation fixes it on Shopify for $3,000. We work in a copy of your theme, and nothing goes live until you approve it.
