Before I spend another dollar on traffic, I want to know whether the people already looking can tell why they should choose us. Increasingly, the first one looking is an AI assistant. My September 23 column for the Forbes Business Council is about fixing that proof before paying for more attention.
- The column: Before You Buy More Traffic, Fix The Proof, Forbes Business Council, September 23, 2026.
- Buying more traffic before your value is clear only brings more people, and more AI assistants, to a page that cannot answer them.
- An AI assistant does not see your storefront. It reads what it can crawl, parse, connect and trust, and it leaves out what it cannot verify.
- In the Visibility Mesh benchmark of 747 live websites, measured on September 20, 2026, the median AI legibility score is 43.8 out of 100 and 67% score below 50.
- The stranger test in the column has a machine version. You can run both on your own site in a few minutes, and the steps are below.
What the column argues
When conversion stalls, most companies reach for tactics: a new button, a shorter checkout, more retargeting, more ads. I would not start there. If the basic reason for choosing a company is unclear, more tactics only speed up the confusion.
Fixing the proof means checking whether a customer can understand what your company does, why it matters, why it is different and why they should believe it. It also means checking whether an AI system can understand the same things without guessing. Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini to compare products and narrow the list before they ever reach your website. If the assistant cannot verify your value, you are not on that list, and no amount of paid traffic changes the list.
Visibility exposes the signal a company already has. It does not create the signal for the company.

The numbers behind it
The column makes the argument. Our living benchmark shows how common the problem is. On September 20, 2026, it held 747 websites scored on the current methodology, ecommerce and not, with one latest score each. The median score was 43.8 out of 100. Two thirds scored below 50, and not one had reached the Leading band, which starts at 80.
The weak point is almost always the layer machines read. In our study of 303 non ecommerce websites, only 1.3% of homepages carried FAQPage markup, and sites with any schema averaged 12.7 points higher than sites without it. Our State of AI Visibility 2026 study found that only 27 of 216 Shopify storefronts, one in eight, were fully legible to AI.
These are not weak businesses. Many have excellent products and real proof. The proof simply lives where a machine cannot find it: in a photo of a label, in a slogan instead of a sentence, or on a page no crawler reaches.
The proof test: four questions, asked twice
The column ends with one test. Ask a stranger to tell you what your company does, who it serves, why it is different and what proof supports the claim. If the stranger cannot answer, you do not have a traffic problem yet. You have a clarity problem.
Now ask the same four questions of a machine. Each one maps to something you can check today.
1. What do you do?
Open your homepage, view the page source, and search for the sentence that says what you do. If that sentence exists only in an image, a video or a script that loads later, an AI crawler may never read it. The pass condition is one plain sentence in the HTML that a stranger would understand.
2. Who do you serve?
Check that your robots.txt file does not block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended, and that the pages describing your customers are linked from your main navigation. An assistant cannot describe an audience it cannot reach.
3. Why are you different?
Find one sentence on your site that an assistant could quote as the reason to choose you. Words such as innovative, premium or industry leading do not pass. A specific standard, material, method or result does.
4. What proves it?
Check that your company name, products, prices and policies match across your site, your structured data and the places that mention you. A price in your structured data that differs from the visible price is worse than no markup, because it produces a recommendation that fails at checkout.
Then ask ChatGPT the question your buyer asks, without your brand name. If you are missing or described wrongly, the four checks above usually show why. For a longer version by hand, the 20 minute audit walks through seven checks.
What to do before your next traffic budget
- Run the stranger test with a real person, and write down every question they could not answer.
- Run the machine version: a free scan reads five of your pages the way an AI crawler does and scores what it can find, read, follow, quote and trust.
- Fix the gaps in order of impact, then scan again to see what changed before you spend more on traffic.
This is the work Visibility Mesh does. We read your website the way AI systems read it, show exactly what stops them from recommending you, hand you the fixes in order, and let you scan again to see what changed. It works for any website, and our Shopify app applies safe fixes in the store with your approval. Clear proof is what turns the demand already in your market into organic traffic and sales.
FAQ
What does it mean to fix the proof?
It means making sure a buyer, and the AI assistant a buyer asks, can tell what your company does, who it serves, why it is different and what evidence supports the claim, without having to guess. The proof has to live in text and data a machine can read, not only in a slogan or an image.
Should I stop buying ads until my proof is fixed?
No. Paid ads have a place. The point is order: when the reason to choose you is unclear, more traffic brings more people to a page that cannot answer them. Fix the proof first so the traffic you already pay for has something to convert on.
How do I know whether AI understands my value proposition?
Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity the question your buyer asks, without your brand name, and see whether you are named and described correctly. Then check whether the facts behind your claim are in the text of your pages, in structured data, and consistent across the places that mention you. A free scan reads five of your pages the way an AI crawler does and scores what it can find, read, follow, quote and trust.
Can answer engine optimization make my company the answer?
Good answer engine optimization (AEO) does not make a company the answer when it is not the answer. It makes the company understandable when it is the answer. If a claim has no evidence, the fix is to build the evidence, not to repeat the claim.
The free scan reads five of your pages the way an AI crawler does and returns a real scorecard across the five questions, with the first fixes in order. No install, no call, no card. Run the free scan
