Most Shopify SEO apps do the same four things, and the differences that matter are not the ones on the pricing page. Here is how to tell them apart, including where ours is not the right answer.
- Many of them handle meta tags, alt text, broken links and basic structured data.
- What differs is whether they change anything or only report, and whether they touch AI readability at all.
- Installing three overlapping apps is a common and expensive mistake, and they can conflict.
What do these apps generally do?
Four things, with heavy overlap between vendors: edit meta titles and descriptions in bulk, fill alt text, find broken links and redirects, and inject some structured data.
All four help. None of them are hard to do without an app if you have the patience, which is why the real question is what you get beyond them.
What should I compare instead of features?
Four questions that actually separate them.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it change things or just report? | A findings list you never action is a subscription for a document |
| Does its structured data match your real content? | Injected schema that contradicts the page is worse than none |
| Does it cover AI readability? | Most were built for ranked lists, not for being quoted in answers |
| What happens when you uninstall? | Ask whether the schema and settings stay when you uninstall |
What do most of them not do yet?
Tell you whether an assistant can read your store and what it would say about you. That is a different measurement from keyword positions, and many Shopify apps now say they check it, so compare what each one reads and whether it scans again.
That gap is why we built ours, and it is fair to say so plainly: if what you need is bulk meta editing and redirect management, a long established SEO app will serve you better and probably cheaper. If what you need is to know why ChatGPT never names your store, that is the problem we measure. The tools landscape compares the wider category, including tools we do not compete with.
How many should I install?
One in each category, and be strict about it. Two apps both injecting product schema produce duplicates, and duplicated identity markup is a real problem rather than a cosmetic one.
If you already run several, audit what each is emitting before adding another. Duplicate organization schema covers the failure this creates most often.
Common questions
Do I need an SEO app at all on Shopify?
Not strictly. Shopify handles sitemaps, canonicals and basic product markup. Apps buy you speed on bulk edits and catch things you would otherwise miss.
Will an app hurt my site speed?
It can, particularly ones injecting scripts on every page. Check your speed before and after installing, and remove anything you are not actively using.
Is a free plan enough?
For a small catalogue, often yes. The paid tiers usually buy bulk operations and automation, which matter at scale and not much below it.
