To fix AI visibility when an assistant gets your business wrong, correct the fact where the assistant reads it. Start with your own pages, move to the structured data that restates them, and finish with any outside listing that still carries the old version. You cannot edit the answer itself, and none of the assistant makers we checked gives a date by which a correction will appear.
- A wrong answer comes from a source the assistant read or from what a model learned before its training cutoff.
- You can correct every source you control and report the answer, but you cannot edit the answer yourself.
- Your Google Business Profile carries the open or closed status Google shows for your business.
- After the fix, scan your site again so you can see that your own pages now agree.
Where wrong answers come from
OpenAI documents two routes into an answer, and they fail in different ways. Its page on accuracy says that without search, a response comes from what the model learned in training, which stops at its knowledge cutoff. With search, the answer comes from pages ChatGPT finds and reads that day.
We group the places a wrong fact survives into four. The grouping is ours. The first is an old page on your own site that is still live, such as a blog post, a policy page or a PDF. The second is structured data that kept an old value after the visible text changed. The third is a directory, marketplace or profile that still carries the old version. The fourth is the model’s training, which does not include anything after its cutoff.
If your own pages disagree with each other, the answer can inherit the confusion. When your site contradicts itself covers that case.
Trace the wrong answer to its source in four steps
In security work, the first job after an incident is to record what happened before anyone touches the system. Do the same here before you fix anything. The wrong version may still be published somewhere you control, and that is the first place to look.
- Write down the wrong statement word for word, with the question you asked, the assistant, the date and whether it searched the web.
- Search your own site for the wrong value, such as the old price, the old address or the old name in quotation marks. Open every page that comes back, including old blog posts, policy pages and PDFs you forgot were still live.
- View the page source of the page that should carry the right fact and search it for the value. Structured data can keep an old price or address after the visible text was corrected, and that layer is written for machines to read.
- Check the places outside your site that describe you. Start with your Google Business Profile and your Bing Places listing, then marketplace listings, directory profiles and the profiles your sameAs links point to. Correct every one that still carries the old version, then scan your site again so you can see that your own pages agree.
If the trace leads somewhere you cannot fix yourself, use Tell us what's not working. Describe the problem in your own words, and a person will reply within one business day.
The layer in step 3 is the one that failed most often in our study of 216 Shopify storefronts (June 2026). Of the five metrics, Entity Integrity failed most: 72 percent of storefronts earned less than half its points. Authority Signal, which covers consistent identity and freshness, failed at 68 percent. The study measured Shopify stores, and the same layers exist on any website.
What you can and cannot change
You can correct every source you control. That covers your pages, your structured data, your Google Business Profile, your Bing Places listing and your profiles on other sites. You can also report the answer. OpenAI asks users to flag an incorrect answer with the thumbs down button, and Google’s AI Overviews carry a thumbs down with a Report a problem option.
You cannot edit an answer yourself, and no page we read gives a date for a correction to appear. Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and that requesting a crawl does not guarantee instant inclusion. OpenAI publishes no recrawl timing for its search crawler.
You can shorten the wait on Bing. Microsoft says IndexNow tells participating search engines when content is added, updated or removed, and it helps AI systems reference the most current version of a page. Google’s guide to its AI features (last updated July 10, 2026) names Google Business Profile and Merchant Center as ways to keep business and product details visible in AI responses.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fix AI visibility when an assistant gets my business wrong?
Fix the source it reads. Correct the fact on your own pages, make the structured data on those pages say the same thing, and update outside listings that still carry the old version. Report the wrong answer through the feedback control in the assistant. Then scan your site again so you can see that every page agrees, and ask the assistant the same question a few weeks later.
Google's AI says my business is closed. How do I fix it?
Start with your Google Business Profile, since it controls the Temporarily closed or Permanently closed status Google shows on Search and Maps. Google says a business marked closed by mistake can be reopened, so set it to open with your current hours. Then search your own site and the directories that list you for any page that mentions a closure or old hours, and correct it. Report the AI Overview with its thumbs down and Report a problem option, and check again after Google has recrawled the pages.
Can I ask OpenAI to correct what ChatGPT says about my company?
You can report a wrong answer, but you cannot edit it. OpenAI asks users to flag an incorrect answer with the thumbs down button, which does not change the answer on a known date. The OpenAI help pages we read on September 26, 2026 describe no form for a company to correct facts about itself. The lasting fix is to correct the sources ChatGPT reads. When ChatGPT searches the web, corrected sources can reach the answer, while facts from training stop at the model’s cutoff.
Why does AI still show our old prices or our old address?
An old price or address usually survives somewhere the assistant still reads. Look for an old blog post, policy page or PDF that is still live, structured data that kept the previous value, and directory or marketplace listings. Search your site for the old value, view the page source of your main pages, and update your listings. Microsoft names Bing Places as the place to keep address and hours current. For shopping results, OpenAI says a merchant’s price change can take a while to show up.
We updated our website, so why do AI answers still show the old facts?
The answer changes only after the systems that read your site notice the update. Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and OpenAI publishes no recrawl timing for its search crawler. An assistant may also still read older pages elsewhere that repeat the old fact, and answers from training stop at the model’s cutoff. Check that the corrected pages are indexed, that no old copy is live and that your profiles match, then ask again a few weeks later.
Why does ChatGPT make up facts about my company?
OpenAI calls this a hallucination and says ChatGPT can produce incorrect facts and fabricated references, sometimes with high confidence. It also says the model may be unable to read a website because of technical issues, paywalls or robots.txt settings. A small or new company gives it little to go on. Publish the facts yourself in plain sentences on an About page and in Organization structured data. Keep them the same on every profile, and let the search crawlers in.
What if AI sends people to the wrong website for my company?
Treat it as an identity problem, and as a security problem if the other site imitates you. List the same official address in your Organization structured data, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles and your directory listings. Report an imitation site to Google Safe Browsing and to OpenAI’s content reporting form. OpenAI says reported domains may be reviewed so ChatGPT relies less on unreliable sources. Warn your customers on your own site, then check the answer again after the pages are recrawled.
What can we do when AI describes our product features or pricing wrongly and it costs us deals?
Publish the facts buyers ask about on pages an assistant can read. Keep a pricing page with current prices or ranges and an integrations page that names each integration. Add a features page that says what the product does and does not do. Update or remove old comparison tables and PDFs, and ask review sites to correct their entries. Record the questions where assistants get it wrong and recheck them monthly. Your sales team can correct the error with prospects in the meantime.
