A thin product page is not short, it is unspecific. Here is the same page written twice, with a note on what each added sentence buys you.
- Length is not the problem. Missing facts are.
- Every attribute a buyer filters on has to exist as text, not only in an image.
- Adding four sentences is usually enough to move a page from unusable to quotable.
What does thin actually mean?
It means an assistant cannot answer a question about the product using the page. Not that the page is short. A two hundred word page full of specifics beats an eight hundred word page of atmosphere.
The test is simple: pick a question a buyer would ask before paying, and try to answer it using only what is on the page. If you cannot, neither can an assistant.
The before
A real pattern, lightly disguised: Our signature jacket combines timeless style with modern craftsmanship. Designed for those who demand more from their wardrobe. Premium materials throughout.
That is three sentences and zero facts. There is nothing here to compare, quote or filter on. An assistant asked for a waterproof cycling jacket under two hundred cannot tell whether this qualifies on any of the three constraints.
The after
Same product, same tone, facts added: A waterproof shell jacket for winter cycling, rated to 10,000mm and taped at every seam. Cut long at the back to stay down over drops. Sized 34 to 46, fits over a mid layer. Machine washable at 30 degrees. £180.
Every added clause corresponds to a filter a buyer or an assistant applies. Use case, rating, fit, sizing, care, price. It is not longer by much. It is answerable.
What to add, in order
Work down this list and stop when a stranger could choose confidently.
- What it is, in the words a buyer would use, in the first sentence.
- Who or what it is for, stated rather than implied.
- The two or three specifications people compare on in your category.
- Sizing or fit, as text, not only as a chart image.
- Availability and price in structured data as well as on the page, per claims in fields.
- The objection your support inbox hears most, answered.
How do I know it worked?
Ask an assistant a question that the added facts should now answer, naming the constraints rather than the product. If the page is retrievable and the facts are extractable, it becomes a candidate.
Do it across a category rather than one product, since comparison is what decides the shortlist. Product descriptions for AI covers the pattern at scale.
Common questions
How long should a product description be?
Long enough to answer the questions a buyer asks before paying, and no longer. That is usually 120 to 250 words for a simple product.
Will AI written descriptions work?
Only if you supply the facts. A model given no specifics produces exactly the atmospheric copy that fails, at greater volume.
Do I need to rewrite every product?
Start with the ones that already get traffic and the ones you most want to sell. The pattern transfers quickly once you have done a few.
