ChatGPT can recommend a Shopify store only when its crawler can reach the store, read the product facts and match each product to the same item elsewhere. Four checks cover the part you can control. Robots.txt must let OAI-SearchBot in, the facts must sit in the page itself, each product needs its GTIN, and the store must be eligible for Shopify's ChatGPT channel. Nobody can buy or promise a place in the answer, so these 4 checks are where your effort pays.
By Margareta Petrovic, CISA, CISSP, founder of Visibility Mesh. Our engine has scored 957 websites to date (figure measured October 4, 2026).
An audit starts with access and evidence, and so does our review of a store. Content comes later. If the crawler cannot get in, nothing else on this list matters yet. ChatGPT will not read a product description on a page its crawler was never allowed to fetch.
We run the 4 checks below in the order OpenAI's crawler meets a store. You need your Shopify admin and a browser, nothing else.
You will not see it when a store fails these checks. The shopper still gets an answer, and it names the stores whose pages ChatGPT could read. No report in Shopify shows you the sale that went to one of them.
Check 1: Does robots.txt let ChatGPT's search crawler in?
OpenAI runs a separate crawler for each job. OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search. OpenAI says a site that opts out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking GPTBot is a separate choice, and it does not remove you from search.
Every Shopify store has a default robots.txt file. Shopify describes it as optimal for SEO. The file changes when someone edits the robots.txt.liquid template in the theme. Shopify's help page warns that a wrong edit can cost a store all of its traffic. Shopify says it handles bot management for its stores itself, and the one crawler setting it leaves to the owner is robots.txt.
Read this file before anything else on a store. Open yourstore.com/robots.txt in a browser. Look for a block that names OAI-SearchBot. Under User-agent: *, look for a line that reads Disallow: / on its own. That line shuts out every crawler that has no rule of its own. If you change the file, OpenAI says its systems need about 24 hours to adjust. Our guide to checking what your robots.txt blocks goes through the file line by line.
Robots.txt does not control everything. Shopify says it sends product data to agentic storefronts such as ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, independently of robots.txt. So a blocked crawler keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search answers while the catalog feed keeps running. Check 4 covers the feed.
Check 2: Can ChatGPT read the product facts on the page?
OpenAI's shopping help page lists what ChatGPT considers when it picks products. One item is structured metadata from first party and third party providers, such as price and product description. In practice, the facts a shopper asks about should be readable on your own page.
Those facts live in two places. One is the text of the page as your store sends it, before any script runs. The other is Product structured data. That is a block of code stating the name, price, currency and availability in a format machines read.
Open a product page, choose View page source and search for the price. If the price is there, a crawler does not need to run scripts to find it. Our guide to inspecting the raw HTML of a page shows the same test step by step. Also paste the page address into Google's Rich Results Test. It should find one Product item with the price the shopper sees.
Check 3: Does every product carry its GTIN?
A GTIN, or Global Trade Item Number, is the number printed under a product's barcode. It is 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits long. With a GTIN, a machine can match the product on your page to the same product in a feed, on a review site or in another store.
Auditors match two records about the same item on an identifier, and machines do the same. Machines are reluctant to take a product description on trust, which is one of the few things they have in common with auditors.
Google's Merchant Center help says products with an assigned GTIN that are submitted without one may have limited visibility. OpenAI's product feed specification for merchants has its own gtin field. It tells merchants to leave the field out when no GTIN is assigned. Neither company wants a guess, and Google says incorrect identifiers can get a product disapproved.
In Shopify the GTIN goes in the Barcodes section of the product or the variant. You choose GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN as the type. Shopify allows up to 20 barcodes on each product or variant, so every variant can carry its own number. Our guide to GTIN, MPN and SKU explains how the identifiers differ.
A filled barcode field does not prove that the page shows the GTIN. Themes can print Product markup with Shopify's structured_data filter, and the example output in Shopify's documentation for that filter shows no GTIN. So run a product page through the Rich Results Test and look for a gtin property. If the barcode is in your admin and gtin is missing from the page, your theme is not printing it.
Do you make your own products and have no GTINs? You have nothing to add, and Google and OpenAI both say to leave the field empty. OpenAI also says a part number must not be invented to replace a missing GTIN.
Check 4: Is your store eligible for Shopify's ChatGPT channel?
Shopify sends your catalog to ChatGPT through its agentic storefronts. Only stores and products that meet its requirements are included. A product with Unlisted status is hidden from Shopify Catalog, from internet search and from your sitemap. The store requirements cover your policies, the terms you accept and the markets you sell to. Our guide to why a Shopify store is missing from ChatGPT shopping goes through each one.
What the 4 checks cannot do
The checks make sure nothing on your own pages gives ChatGPT a reason to skip you. They do not decide the whole answer. OpenAI does not publish how ChatGPT weighs its sources, and data from third party providers is one of them. Mentions of your store on other sites take longer to earn. Our guide to why AI keeps recommending your competitors covers that part, and our guide on whether ChatGPT recommends products explains how it picks in general.
Most stores still have work to do on their own pages. Of the 433 online stores in our live benchmark, 76% score below 50 out of 100 (figures measured October 4, 2026).
What you can do this week
- Open yourstore.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot and for Disallow: / under User-agent: *.
- Ask whoever edited the robots.txt.liquid template, if anyone did, what they changed.
- View the page source of your best seller and search it for the price.
- Run the same page through the Rich Results Test and count the Product items.
- Add the GTIN from the packaging to your 10 best sellers, where one exists.
- Run the Rich Results Test again and look for a gtin property.
- Write down the date of each change.
When it makes sense to hire help
An owner can do the first pass alone. We would hire help in three cases. The robots.txt.liquid template was edited and nobody knows why. The theme prints no gtin although your barcodes are filled in. Several apps print their own Product markup. All of those live in the theme, and a mistake in a product template reaches every product page you have.
Our Foundation setup opens crawler access and removes broken or duplicate markup at the template level, on Shopify and WordPress. Schema Mesh includes everything in Foundation. It adds structured data built from your own products.
Questions owners ask
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from recommending my store?
It does not. OpenAI says GPTBot collects content that may be used to train its models, and it lists GPTBot separately from search. OAI-SearchBot decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers. You can block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot in the same file.
Does Shopify's default robots.txt block ChatGPT?
Shopify describes its default file as optimal for SEO. Its help page does not say that the default blocks OAI-SearchBot. The file changes when someone edits the robots.txt.liquid template, so open yourstore.com/robots.txt and read what your store serves today.
Where do I add a GTIN in Shopify?
Open the product or the variant and find the Barcodes section. Add the number and set the type to GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN. Shopify allows up to 20 barcodes on each product or variant.
My products are handmade and have no barcode. Is that a problem?
It is not. Google recommends a GTIN only for products that have one assigned. OpenAI's feed specification says to omit it when it is unassigned. Do not invent a number, since Google says incorrect identifiers can get a product disapproved.
How soon will ChatGPT see my store after I fix robots.txt?
OpenAI says its systems need about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change. That is when the crawler is allowed back. OpenAI gives no date for when a page appears in an answer, so write down the date of your change.
Will these 4 checks make ChatGPT recommend my store?
Nobody can promise that, and OpenAI does not publish how ChatGPT weighs its sources. The checks make sure nothing on your own pages gives ChatGPT a reason to skip you. The rest depends on mentions on other sites and on what the shopper asks.
Run the 4 checks on your store in one pass
The free scan checks your robots.txt rules for each crawler from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity separately. It also reads the structured data and text of 5 key pages. You get a 0 to 100 score and a fix list in priority order, and you do not need a card. If the fixes sit in your theme, we can make them. Foundation opens crawler access and cleans up the markup, and Schema Mesh adds structured data built from your own products. You approve every change before it goes live.
