How to Improve Your Google Ranking

How to Improve Your Google Ranking. A Visibility Mesh guide for ecommerce AI visibility.

Ranking is decided by three things, and most advice buries them under a hundred tactics. Here they are in order, along with the thing that changed underneath all of it.

By Margareta Petrovic, founder of Visibility Mesh. We measure how legible ecommerce stores are to AI, and publish what we find. Updated August 2026.
Key takeaways
  • Relevance, then trust, then experience. In that order.
  • Most sites lose on relevance, which is the one entirely under their control.
  • Ranking now matters less than being quoted, because many searches end without a click.

What actually decides a ranking?

Three things, and the order matters because effort spent on the third while failing the first is wasted.

Why do most sites lose on relevance?

Because they write about a topic instead of answering a question. A page called Our Services is about a topic. A page called How Much Does an AI Visibility Audit Cost answers a question somebody typed.

The fix is to find the actual phrasing buyers use and write the page that settles it. Question coverage covers how to find those phrasings without a paid tool.

What changed now that answers replaced links?

The value of a ranking dropped and the value of being quoted rose. A large share of searches now show an answer that satisfies the person without a click, and the sources cited in that answer get the attention that used to go to position one.

So the work splits. Keep doing what earns rankings, and add what earns citations, which is passages that stand alone and state something specific. How to write so AI can quote you is that part.

What can you skip?

Keyword density, meta keywords, submitting your site to hundreds of directories, and buying links. The first two do nothing, the third is noise, and the fourth is a risk that outlives the benefit.

If a tactic sounds like a trick, it is competing against a system with a large team dedicated to finding tricks. Answer questions better instead. That one has never stopped working.

Common questions

How long does it take to rank?
Months on a new site, faster on an established one. Anybody promising weeks is selling something.

Do I need backlinks?
For competitive terms, yes. For specific long questions in your niche, often not, which is why those are where a small site should start.

Is ranking still a good use of your time?
Yes, but not alone. Rankings and citations come from overlapping work, so the sensible plan earns both rather than choosing.
