How do you measure AI visibility?

You can measure four things today. Google reports impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Microsoft reports citations in Copilot and Bing. Your analytics show visits that arrive from AI assistants. The fourth measure is your own: what assistants say when you ask them the same questions on a schedule. Nobody outside the platforms can see the full set of questions people ask, or why an assistant picked the sources it used. Report the four numbers side by side and do not claim that one caused another.

By Margareta Petrovic, founder of Visibility Mesh. We measure how legible websites are to AI, and publish what we find. We published this article on .

AI visibility is how often and how accurately AI assistants and AI search features find a business, describe it and name or cite it when people ask questions the business can answer.

That definition, from our AI visibility guide, is also the measurement problem. Two of the four sources will count how often for you. None of them will judge how accurately, so that part stays with you.

As a CISA, I hold on to one audit rule: decide what you will test before you look at the results. Measuring AI answers needs the same discipline. A question list you wrote after seeing a flattering answer is not a sample, since you picked it because you liked the answer.

What can be measured and what cannot

The four measures available on September 26, 2026, from each platform's own documentation.
Measure Where it comes from What it covers What it misses
Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode Search Console, Generative AI performance report Google only, by page, country, date and device Queries, and every assistant outside Google
Citations in AI answers Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance report Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and some partner integrations ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini
Visits from AI assistants GA4 AI Assistant channel, Microsoft Clarity AI channels, or referral data People who clicked a link in an answer People who read the answer and never clicked
Answers to a fixed question set Your own repeated checks, by hand or with a tool Whether an assistant mentions, cites or recommends you Everything outside your question set

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude publish crawler documentation. None of the pages we read on September 26, 2026 offers site owners a report of how often their answers show a brand. OpenAI does document one useful thing for analytics: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends.

The Search Console Generative AI performance report

Google's Generative AI performance report shows how often links to your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can group the data by page, country, date and device. The help page lists no query dimension, so you can see which pages were shown but not the questions that triggered them. Google says it rolled the report out to all websites as of August 31, 2026. A site that has excluded itself from Search generative AI features in Search Console will not see data there.

Search Console Help says a click on a link inside an AI Overview or AI Mode counts as a click in the ordinary Performance report. So the new report gives you impressions, and the familiar report holds the clicks. The step by step guide is in how to see AI Overviews and AI Mode performance in Search Console.

The Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report

Microsoft's AI Performance report counts how often your pages are cited as sources in Microsoft Copilot, in AI summaries in Bing and in some partner integrations. It shows total citations, the average number of your pages cited per day, citations per page and a trend line. It also shows grounding queries, which Microsoft describes as the key phrases its AI used to retrieve the content it cited, and it labels them a sample.

In June 2026 Microsoft added Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare. Citation Share is the percentage of all citations for one grounding query that went to your site. Microsoft says it does not show competitor domains and does not represent traffic share. Microsoft publishes citation counts for site owners in two places, this report and Clarity's Citations dashboard. I have not found an equivalent report in the OpenAI, Perplexity or Anthropic documentation. Read how to read the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools before you put it in a slide.

AI referral visits in GA4 and Microsoft Clarity

GA4's default channel group now has an AI Assistant channel for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. Most dashboards miss one detail in Google's definition. The AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, and GA4 counts those visits as Organic Search. If your report adds up only the AI Assistant channel, it leaves out every visit from Google's own AI answers, by design. Our guide on tracking AI traffic in Google Analytics shows how to set the report up.

Microsoft Clarity sorts the same kind of visit into two channels, AIPlatform for organic links and PaidAIPlatform for paid ones. Clarity counts only visits from the assistants' own websites, such as chatgpt.com. AI features inside a search engine or an office app are left out. Its Citations dashboard adds page citations, grounding queries and the share of sessions that came from AI assistants.

Repeated question checks

For ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, the only way to see what the answers say is to ask, and to ask the same way every time.

  • Write the questions your buyers ask and the competitors you want to compare against, and freeze both lists before the first run.
  • Run every question several times on each assistant, each time in a fresh chat.
  • Note in each answer whether you are mentioned, cited or recommended, and which competitors appear.
  • Repeat the same runs every month from a dated baseline.

Answers vary between runs, so one check proves little. The trend across the same questions is the measure. The AI share of voice article shows how to turn the counts into a share, and how to check what ChatGPT and other AI assistants say about your brand walks through a run.

Mentions, citations and recommendations

A mention just names the business. A citation goes further and links to one of its pages or lists it as a source. A recommendation frames the mention as advice for the buyer. The three happen separately. A brand can be recommended while the answer cites a review site instead of the brand's own page, so we record all three in separate columns.

How to report without claiming cause

Start every report from a baseline with a date, and keep a log of what changed on the site and when. When a number moves after a change, write that the change and the movement are associated, and say what else happened in the same weeks. Microsoft's own post on AI search and conversions says many signals of influence are not captured in traditional analytics today. In plain terms, part of the effect will never show up in any report.

The same rule applies to our own numbers. When we scan an unchanged site twice, the two scores usually land within about 2 points of each other, so a movement of one point is noise. A rescan shows what changed in the score and in what a crawler can read. It does not show that a fix changed what an assistant says.

Results over time

Different measures move at different speeds. A change to robots.txt or a firewall rule shows up in the next scan. Google says crawling a changed page can take between several days and several months, and its guide on traffic drops suggests waiting a few weeks before reading Search Console again. OpenAI says ChatGPT search can take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change. AI answers also drift on their own schedule. Compare the same questions month over month, and do not react to a single bad week. Our article on AI visibility return on investment covers the baseline and the 90 day plan.

What Visibility Mesh measures

The Visibility Mesh scan measures the website side: what an AI crawler can fetch and read on your pages, and whether the robots.txt rule lets in each of eight AI crawler names from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity. On Shopify, the app's AI Mentions feature runs buyer questions and shows who the assistant names, you or a rival, and the Pro and Growth plans add AI traffic tracking. The web product does not read your GA4 or Search Console data, so those numbers stay in your accounts. For a comparison of tools, see AI visibility checkers compared.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between an AI mention, an AI citation and an AI recommendation?

A mention is when an AI answer names the business. A citation is when the answer links to one of the business's pages or lists it as a source, and Microsoft counts these in the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. A recommendation is a mention framed as advice, such as a product or provider the assistant suggests for the buyer's need. They can happen separately. A brand can be recommended while the answer cites a review site instead of the brand's own page, so record all three separately.

Is Google Search Console enough to measure AI visibility?

Search Console is not enough on its own, since it covers Google only. Its Generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, and clicks on AI Overview links are counted in the ordinary Performance report. It shows nothing about ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Copilot. Bing Webmaster Tools adds Copilot and Bing citations, and your analytics add visits from assistants. For everything no platform reports, check the questions buyers ask on a schedule.

What can and cannot be measured in AI search?

You can measure impressions in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers, visits that arrive from assistants, conversions from those visits, and what assistants say across repeated runs of a fixed question set. You cannot see how often ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude show your brand, since none of them publishes a report for site owners. You also cannot see answers that influenced a buyer who never clicked. Microsoft says many of these influence signals are not captured in traditional analytics today.

Do AI citations send traffic to my website?

Citations sometimes send traffic, and far less often than your pages are shown. A citation is a link a reader can follow, and Search Console counts a click on a link inside an AI Overview or AI Mode as a click. Microsoft says its Citation Share does not represent traffic share. Many readers take the answer and never click, so visits from assistants look small next to impressions. Track citations and visits separately. A citation may still show up later as a branded search or a direct visit.

Can I see the questions people asked when an AI cited my website?

You can see them only in part, and only for Microsoft. Bing Webmaster Tools shows grounding queries, the key phrases its AI used to retrieve your cited pages, as a sample. Microsoft Clarity's Citations dashboard also lists the queries AI systems used to retrieve your content. Google's Generative AI performance report lists no query dimension in its documentation. OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic publish no report of the prompts behind a citation. When a tool shows you the prompts behind a citation, it is showing the questions it chose to ask.

What is prompt volume, and can I trust it?

Prompt volume is a vendor's estimate of how often people ask AI assistants a given question, sold as the AI version of keyword search volume. None of the AI platforms whose documentation we read on September 26, 2026 publishes question counts for site owners, so every prompt volume figure is a model. Use it to rank topics against each other inside one tool. Do not compare the numbers across vendors, and do not treat them as counts.

How often do AI answers about my brand change?

The answers change often, and no platform publishes a schedule. Microsoft says citation patterns shift with user behavior, evolving models, freshness signals, partner refresh cycles and changes across the web. OpenAI says ChatGPT search rewrites a question into search queries and may use the person's general location, so two people can get different answers. Google says crawling a changed page can take between several days and several months. Measure over weeks with the same questions instead of trusting a single check.

Can I track AI traffic and AI citations outside Google Analytics?

You can, with Microsoft Clarity. Clarity sorts visits from ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity into two channels. AIPlatform holds organic links and PaidAIPlatform holds paid placements, and only visits from the assistants' own websites count. Its Citations dashboard shows page citations, grounding queries and the share of sessions from AI assistants, and it may ask you to verify the domain through Bing Webmaster Tools or Search Console first. Server logs show AI crawler visits, which is a separate measure from human visits.
