Squarespace and Wix AI visibility depends on 2 things you control: whether your words are in the page source, and whether your site states who you are in structured data. Both platforms handle the basics competently, and both leave the same specific gaps, which decide whether an assistant can describe your business.
- Sitemaps, canonicals and mobile rendering are handled for you on both.
- What is missing on both is depth: structured data beyond the defaults, and answer shaped content.
- Heavy reliance on client side rendering is the most common reason content is not seen.
What do these platforms do for you already?
The plumbing. Sitemaps generate themselves, canonical tags are set, pages are mobile responsive and the URL structure is sane by default. That is genuinely most of what a small site used to need an agency for.
So if somebody tells you a Squarespace or Wix site cannot rank, that has not been true for years. The constraint is not the platform, it is what you put on it.
What do they leave to you?
The parts that require knowing your business, and one technical gap that catches people out.
| Area | Handled? | What you still do |
|---|---|---|
| Sitemap and canonicals | Yes | Nothing |
| Page titles and descriptions | Partly | Write them, do not accept defaults |
| Structured data | Basic only | Add specifics for your business type |
| Answer shaped content | No | This is entirely on you |
| Client side rendering | Varies | Check your content exists without scripts |
How do I check my own site?
The same checks apply on any platform, because assistants do not care what you built on. The 6 checks take about 20 minutes and rule out the common causes.
Start on these platforms by viewing your page source and searching for a sentence you can see on screen. If it is not in the source, it is being drawn by scripts, and some assistants will never see it.
Should I move platform for this?
Almost never for visibility reasons alone. A migration costs you the authority attached to your existing URLs and takes months to recover, and the gaps above exist on every platform including the ones people migrate to.
Move platform when the platform limits your business. Do not move it to chase a ranking.
What to check on a Squarespace or Wix site in 4 steps
If your site sells a service rather than products, the closest measurement we have is our July 2026 study of 303 non ecommerce websites. Their weakest area was structured data. The Schema pillar averaged 35.3% of its available points, and sites with schema scored 12.7 points higher on average than sites without it, which is a correlation rather than proof of cause. These 4 checks show where your own site stands on that layer.
- Open your homepage, view the page source and search for ld+json. Each match is a block of structured data, and the @type line inside it tells you what the block describes.
- Look for an Organization or LocalBusiness block with your business name, your logo and the profiles you control listed under sameAs. If the only block you find describes the website itself, a machine still has no stated facts about the business behind it.
- Open your FAQ page, if you have it, and search its source for FAQPage. Visible questions without that markup can still be read, but our study found the structured version on only 1.3% of sites.
- Open your robots.txt and see whether it names any AI crawler. In the same study, 28.4% of sites named at least 1 and most of those entries were blocks, so make the choice on purpose rather than leaving it to a copied file.
The free scan reads the same layer across 5 of your pages and names each gap it finds.
Common questions
Is Squarespace bad for SEO?
No. It handles the technical basics well. Sites underperform on it for the same reason they underperform anywhere: thin content and no mentions from other sites.
Does Wix block search engines?
Not by default. Older versions of the platform had rendering issues that are largely resolved. Check your own site rather than trusting a general claim either way.
Do I need a developer?
For the checks, no. For adding structured data beyond the platform defaults, sometimes, depending on how much the platform exposes.
Can AI read a Squarespace or Wix website?
It can when your words are in the page source and your site states who you are in structured data. The platform name decides neither of those, so view the source of your own pages and check both rather than relying on a general claim about the platform.
