How do I get my online store recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI answers?

An AI answer engine can only recommend a store it can reach, read and tie to a buyer question. No payment changes that, and nobody can promise a result. The seven checks below are the parts a store owner controls, in the order we would do them. The first five take an afternoon on most Shopify stores, which is faster than the average marketing plan.

1. Is my robots.txt blocking the AI crawlers?

Open yourstore.com/robots.txt in a browser and look for the User-agent: lines for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and Googlebot. A Disallow: / under any of them blocks that crawler. OpenAI documents these as separate settings: OAI-SearchBot decides whether your site appears in ChatGPT search, and GPTBot decides whether your content may be used for training. You can allow the first and block the second. On Shopify the file is robots.txt.liquid, under Online Store, Themes, Edit code, Templates. OpenAI says a change can take about 24 hours to apply.

2. Why can an AI shopping tool not read my product page?

Open one product page and press Ctrl+U. Search the page source for the product title, the price, the availability and the brand. If any of them is missing, an app is drawing it in the browser after the page loads, and a crawler may see an empty field. Move the fact into the theme product template so it is part of the page itself. Check the barcode or SKU and the product images in the same way.

3. Is my Product structured data complete, and is there only one copy?

Paste the product address into Google's Rich Results Test. You should see one Product block with name, image, description, price, currency and availability. Two Product blocks mean two apps write the same data, so switch one off. Google states that AI features need no special markup, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Structured data therefore matters for the product fields shoppers see, and it removes guesswork for the tools that read them.

4. How do I put the buyer question and the answer on my page?

List the five questions a buyer would type into ChatGPT, such as "which linen shirts hold their shape after washing". Use each question as a heading on the matching collection or product page, and write a two sentence answer under it that names your product and gives the reason. Say only what is true for your store, because an engine compares your page with others.

5. Do my About, Shipping and Returns pages state plain facts?

Write the year you started, where the goods are made, the countries you ship to, the days to deliver and the return window. These are the sentences an assistant quotes when a buyer asks whether a store is real.

6. How do I get onto the pages the engines already read?

Ask an engine your category question and open the sources it lists. The names it gives come from those pages, which are often roundups and directories. Write to each owner with one factual sentence about your store and ask whether it fits the list. Do not offer payment.

7. How do I measure AI visits and AI mentions?

Treat these as two separate measures. For visits, look in your analytics traffic sources for AI assistants, and add "where did you hear about us" to your order or contact form, because some visits arrive without a referrer. For mentions, ask the same three buyer questions on a schedule and write down whether your store was named. AI answers can differ between identical runs, so one check is a sample, and a trend over several runs tells you more. The Visibility Mesh AI visibility audit runs checks 1 to 5 for every page, and the Visibility Mesh Shopify app runs the mentions check on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Our roadmap lists what we check today and what is still being built.

Questions store owners ask

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my store?

No payment buys a place in a ChatGPT answer. A store controls whether its pages can be found and read, and whether other pages mention it.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my store from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI documents GPTBot for training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, and each setting is independent.

Do Google AI answers need special markup?

No. Google states that the page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and that no special schema or AI text file is required.

Why do I get a different answer each time I ask?

AI answers can change between identical runs, so one check is a sample. Ask on a schedule and compare several runs.

How do I track visits that come from AI assistants?

Look for AI assistants in your traffic sources and ask buyers where they heard of you, because some visits arrive without a referrer.
