Does ChatGPT Get Paid to Recommend Products?

Does ChatGPT Get Paid to Recommend Products?. A Visibility Mesh guide for ecommerce AI visibility.

ChatGPT is not paid to recommend products, according to OpenAI. Its help center says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers and that advertisers have no ability to shape, rank or alter its responses. A business can buy an ad below the answer, labeled as sponsored, but it cannot buy a place inside the answer.

Key takeaways
  • OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
  • Ads appear below the end of a response with a sponsored label, for Free and Go users in the regions where OpenAI runs them.
  • Product results in ChatGPT shopping are not ads, according to OpenAI.
  • A place in the answer is earned with pages ChatGPT can read, so that is where the budget belongs.

Can a merchant pay to be named in a ChatGPT answer?

The answer itself is not for sale, according to OpenAI. Its help page on ads says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and are clearly labeled. Its shopping help page says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads and are not influenced by any OpenAI partnerships. Paid ads are a separate, labeled unit below the answer.

I read those sentences the way I read a vendor’s control statement in an audit. OpenAI describes a separation between the system that picks ads and the model that writes the answer. It adds that ChatGPT cannot see the ads shown to a user unless the user shares one with it. That is a stated control, and I have not seen an independent test of it. The literal reading is the one to plan on: the ad carries a label, and the answer is written without it.

Money decides one thing here: the order in which ads appear. When several ads are eligible, OpenAI says it weighs relevance and advertiser bids to choose which one shows first.

Does ChatGPT show ads, and do ads change its answers?

ChatGPT shows ads to some users. OpenAI began testing them in the United States on February 9, 2026, on the Free and Go plans. It is rolling them out to eligible users in select regions. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts have no ads, and OpenAI does not show ads to accounts it identifies as belonging to people under 18. Ads appear below the end of a response, are labeled as sponsored and are visually separated from the answer.

On the second half of the question, OpenAI says no. Its advertising principles, published on January 16, 2026, include answer independence: ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. OpenAI also keeps ads away from sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health and politics. A sponsored label marks a paid placement, and OpenAI says nothing else in the answer was bought, including the shopping results.

Why does this matter for a small store?

Budget matters less here than in paid channels, since ChatGPT chooses from what it can read. A store with no ad budget can still appear next to a competitor that spends heavily. What it needs is product data ChatGPT can read. If you want the work laid out week by week, the 90 day AI visibility plan does that.

How do I tell whether an answer was influenced?

Look for the sponsored label first. OpenAI says every ad carries it and sits apart from the response. Then check whether you are looking at shopping results or at the text of the answer, and open the sources ChatGPT cites. The sources show you which pages shaped the answer, whether they are the merchant’s own pages or third parties.

ChatGPT also gets facts wrong in ways that have nothing to do with money. If it states something inaccurate about your business, that is a correction problem, and correcting AI when it is wrong covers it.

If you cannot buy the answer, where does the budget go?

It goes into the facts ChatGPT reads when it builds an answer. Entity Integrity is our metric for whether a brand and its product facts are stated consistently. In our study of 216 Shopify storefronts (June 2026), 72 percent failed it, which means they earned less than half its points.

Access matters as much. In the same study, 41 percent of the storefronts failed Front Door, our metric for whether an AI crawler can read the page at all. Scan the store before the work and again after it with the same engine, so you can see what changed. The median storefront in that study scored 46 out of 100 on June 28, 2026, and the highest reached 71. If you are weighing this against an ad budget, organic versus paid ads sets out how the two differ over time.

Common questions

Is there any way to buy my way into AI recommendations?

In ChatGPT you can buy an ad, but not a place in the answer. OpenAI says ads appear below the response with a sponsored label, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter the response itself. Businesses sign up at ads.openai.com, and availability depends on the country. Other assistants set their own rules, and this page covers only what OpenAI documents.

Do affiliate links influence what AI recommends?

OpenAI does not mention affiliate links in the pages we read. It says product results are not influenced by any OpenAI partnerships, and that advertisers cannot shape ChatGPT’s answers. A roundup page that carries affiliate links is still a page ChatGPT can read and cite, so what the page says can matter. Whether the page earns a commission is not something OpenAI lists as a factor.

Will AI recommendations always be unpaid?

Nobody outside OpenAI can promise that. Today OpenAI’s advertising principles say ads do not influence answers, and that there will always be a way to use ChatGPT without ads, including a paid tier. Those are commitments in a policy, and policies change. I would plan for labeled ads to grow beside the answers, and I would read OpenAI’s ads page again each quarter.

Are the products ChatGPT shows when shopping paid placements?

OpenAI says they are not. Its shopping help page says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads and are not influenced by any OpenAI partnerships. Ads are a separate format that appears below the end of a response with a sponsored label. So a product shown in the answer without that label was not bought. OpenAI does not publish how product results are ranked.

This article rests on OpenAI’s help pages Ads in ChatGPT and Shopping with ChatGPT Search and on its post Our approach to advertising and expanding access to ChatGPT (January 16, 2026). I read all three on September 26, 2026. The study figures come from The State of AI Visibility 2026 (216 Shopify storefronts, scored June 28, 2026), which we measured ourselves.
