Why is nobody finding my website?

Why is nobody finding my website?

A website nobody finds usually has one of four problems. Search engines cannot reach or index it, its pages do not answer what buyers search for, nothing outside the site vouches for it, or few people search for what it offers. Search Console and a free scan show which one you have. Low traffic alone does not prove a technical fault, since a clean new site in a quiet market also gets few visits.

What is happening

The site is live and looks fine in a browser. Search Console shows almost no clicks, or nobody ever set it up. ChatGPT and Perplexity send no visitors at all. Most owners in this spot cannot say whether the cause is technical, content or authority. We start there.

Why it can happen

Search engines cannot reach or index the pages

Some blocks are small and easy to miss:

  • A password or coming soon page is still up.
  • A noindex tag from development was never removed.
  • A robots.txt rule blocks the crawlers.
  • A bot wall at the CDN challenges every automated visitor.
  • The text appears only after JavaScript runs.

We check for all five.

Google lists robots.txt blocks, noindex rules and password protection among the reasons a page is missing from Search. WordPress even has a setting for this. It is called Discourage search engines from indexing this site, and it does exactly what it says until somebody unchecks it.

Our own scanner meets these blocks often. In our study of 229 live Shopify storefronts scanned on June 28, 2026, the engine could not read 13 of them at all. Bot walls, empty JavaScript renders and error pages stopped it. In July 2026 we set out to measure 350 non ecommerce websites, and 47 produced no score. Most of them had heavy bot protection or a homepage built only in JavaScript.

The pages do not answer what buyers search for

Many small sites talk only about the company and its products. Buyers search for their problem long before they know any brand. Search Console shows this gap as indexed pages with few impressions. It also shows clicks that come almost entirely from searches for the company name.

Nothing outside the site vouches for the business

Some pages collect impressions and still stay below the first page. They usually lack outside support: links from relevant sites, reviews from real customers and mentions in directories and the trade press. A young domain has none of this yet, and for a new business that is normal.

Few people search for what the site offers

Some sites are clean, indexed and well written, and still quiet. Few people search for the words the business uses. The impressions column in Search Console shows demand for your pages, and Google Trends shows it for any topic. No fix on the site creates demand that is not there.

This table lists the four causes, the first check for each, its source and what the check does not prove. We read every source on September 26, 2026.

How to check which cause applies

We run the checks in this order. Each cause hides the next one. A blocked page hides whether its content works, so access comes first. Demand comes before authority for the same reason.

  1. Read Search Console clicks and impressions for the last 3 months and the last 16 months.
  2. Run the free scan to rule access blockers in or out.
  3. List the important pages that Google has not indexed, with the reason for each.
  4. Compare the searches you appear for with the questions buyers ask.
  5. Compare your outside mentions with those of two competitors.

Read Search Console clicks and impressions for 3 and 16 months

Open the Performance report. Look at the last 3 months, then at the last 16 months. Filter out searches that contain your brand name.

  • Near zero impressions means Google shows the site for almost nothing.
  • Impressions without clicks point to ranking or to the snippet.
  • Impressions only for your own name mean the site answers nothing else.

No Search Console property at all is your first finding. Add one today. The data starts a few days after you do.

Run the free scan for access blockers

The free scan reads five of your key pages the way an AI crawler receives them. It checks eight AI crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity one at a time against your robots.txt. It flags password pages, noindex tags, bot walls and pages that come back empty. It usually finishes in under 10 minutes. The scan cannot see Search Console, so indexing is the next check.

List important pages that are not indexed

In the Page indexing report, find your important pages under Not indexed. Read the reason Google gives for each one. A noindex tag or a robots.txt block is yours to remove. Crawled, currently not indexed means Google fetched the page and chose to leave it out. Google says such a page may or may not be indexed later, and that you do not need to resubmit it.

We keep the same list for our own site. When one of our pages shows as crawled but not indexed, we add something new and useful to it. Then we request indexing in URL Inspection.

Compare your queries with the questions buyers ask

Write down ten questions your customers ask before they buy. Take them from sales calls, support emails and reviews. Look for each one in the Performance report. A question with no page and no impressions is a gap you can close by writing.

Compare outside mentions with two competitors

Pick two competitors that win the searches you want. List where each one is mentioned outside its own site: directories, review platforms, trade press and partner pages. Do the same for your business. The difference is your authority work. It moves more slowly than anything else on this page.

What it affects

The website brings in few customers, so the business leans on ads, referrals and word of mouth. Problems also stay hidden. A noindex tag or an exclusion in Search Console can sit on a site for months when nobody reads the reports. And without a starting measurement, nobody can tell later whether a change helped.

What you can check and fix yourself

  • Verify the site in Search Console and in Bing Webmaster Tools, and submit your sitemap in both.
  • Take down a password page, a coming soon page or a development noindex tag once the site is ready.
  • Read your robots.txt and delete any rule that blocks a search crawler you want.
  • Link every important page from the homepage or the menu.
  • Write one page for each question buyers ask before they buy.
  • Describe the business in the same words on your site and on the profiles you control.

If we could do only two things this week, we would take the first two on that list. The first gives you the data for every other check, and the second clears the blocks that stop everything else.

The Knowledge Base article on how to diagnose a website that gets no search traffic walks through these checks step by step. How to check if AI can read your website covers the crawler side.

What needs a developer, a writer or outside authority

You need a developer when the block sits in the server, the CDN or the code. That covers bot walls, pages that render empty, redirects and noindex tags written by a theme or a plugin. You need a writer for the pages buyers search for, written from what the business knows first hand. Outside authority is the slowest part. Buying links in bulk breaks Google's spam policies, so authority comes from listings, reviews from real customers and mentions you earn.

How Visibility Mesh finds it and what it can implement

What the scan detects

The scan reads each page as it is served. It checks eight AI crawler names against the robots.txt rule for that page, among them OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. It names the blockers it can measure on the pages it read: password pages, noindex tags, bot walls and empty pages. It does not read Search Console or GA4. In a diagnosis, a person with read access to both reads the data and puts the causes in order.

What Visibility Mesh can implement, and on which platforms

The web scan works on any public website on any platform. What we implement depends on the platform.

  • On Shopify, the Visibility Mesh app applies fixes on its Growth plan after you approve each one, and you can undo them. The app cannot edit theme files, robots.txt or redirects.
  • Our AI Visibility Setup for Shopify is done for you in a duplicated theme, in English, and sold by quote. Nothing goes live until you approve it.
  • On Shopify and WordPress we can also make the changes ourselves and manage the work through Monthly AI Visibility Management, which is sold by quote.
  • Your developer makes the changes on Webflow, custom sites and every other platform. We give the ordered fix plan, and a rescan shows what changed.

What Visibility Mesh does on each website platform has the details.

How each fix is validated

Each fix gets its own check. A live test in URL Inspection shows whether Google can fetch and index the page. A rescan at the same depth shows what a crawler can read now. Over the following weeks, the Page indexing report shows fewer pages under each reason. None of this proves that Google or an AI assistant changed what it shows, and we never claim it does.

How progress is measured

The dated baseline

Before anything changes, we record one baseline week with its dates.

  • We export Search Console clicks and impressions, with searches for your brand name kept apart from all others.
  • We export GA4 sessions and key events from organic search and from AI assistants, filtered to your own hostname.
  • We count the indexed pages and save the scan result.

GA4 has a default channel called AI Assistant for visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Google notes that it excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Search Console counts those under the Web search type.

What is compared each month

In Monthly AI Visibility Management, we rescan your website every month at the same depth, and a monthly performance report is drafted from these numbers. Margareta approves each report before it is sent. A rise after the work is associated with the work. Search engines and AI assistants also change on their own, so our reports never claim that the work caused it.

Questions people ask

Why does my new website still get no visitors from Google after several months?

Google has to find a new website, index it and trust it before it shows the site for competitive searches. Google also says it cannot promise to crawl, index or serve any page. We would start in Search Console. Pages listed as not indexed point to access or quality. Indexed pages with impressions but no clicks point to ranking or relevance. With almost no impressions at all, few people may search for the words your pages use.

How long should a brand new website take to start getting traffic from search?

No search engine publishes a timeline for a new website, so any fixed date is a guess. Google's help page on missing pages says crawling and indexing a new page typically takes a day or two up to a few weeks. Ranking for searches that older sites already serve takes longer. A new site has no history and no links yet. Pages that answer specific, less contested questions tend to appear first. Check Search Console each week for indexed pages and rising impressions.

How can a live website get zero search traffic?

A live website gets zero search traffic when search engines cannot show it or when nobody searches for what it says. The usual blockers are a password page, a leftover noindex tag, a robots.txt rule and text that appears only after JavaScript runs. Google lists robots.txt blocks, noindex rules and password protection among the reasons a page is missing. If none of these applies, the pages may be indexed and match no searched question. Search Console shows that as indexed pages with no impressions.

Is my website broken, or is nobody searching for what I sell?

Search Console can tell the two apart. We start every diagnosis with this split. If indexed pages get impressions for relevant searches but few clicks, the website works and the problem is ranking or the snippet. If indexed pages get almost no impressions, demand is low or the pages miss the words buyers type. Pages missing from the index mean something technical is stopping them. Low traffic alone does not prove a fault. A clean new site with little demand also gets few visits.

How do I know whether my traffic problem is technical, content or authority?

Check them in order, since each one hides the next, and we use this order in every diagnosis. Technical comes first. If important pages are not indexed, or a scan finds blocked crawlers or empty pages, nothing else can work yet. Content is next: indexed pages with few impressions usually do not answer the questions buyers type. Authority is the last check. It fits pages that collect impressions but stay below the first page. Many sites have more than one of these, so the order of the fixes matters more than the length of the list.

Why does my website get visitors from Bing but almost none from Google?

Bing and Google crawl, index and rank websites separately, so a site can appear in one long before the other. A new site can show up in Bing while Google has found its pages and not yet indexed them. Open the Page indexing report and see whether Google lists your pages as crawled or discovered but not indexed. If Google has indexed them, compare the searches each engine shows the site for. The gap is then about competition, not access.

How do I get the first visitors to a brand new website from search?

We would start with pages that answer specific questions your buyers ask. Established sites already hold the broad terms. Verify the site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, and link every important page from the menu. Describe the business the same way on your site and on your profiles, so search engines and AI assistants can tell who you are. Early traffic tends to come from long, precise questions. Watch impressions per page before you chase short, popular terms.

Who can find out why my website gets no traffic?

Anyone you hire needs read access to your Search Console and analytics. The cause often shows only in that data, such as pages Google has not indexed or searches with impressions and no clicks. A page audit on its own shows what machines can read on the site. The free Visibility Mesh scan checks the blockers on the pages themselves, such as password pages, noindex tags and blocked AI crawlers. You can pass the result to whoever you hire. We ask for the same read access when we run a diagnosis, and any provider should show you the data behind theirs.
