How do I get more organic traffic to my website?

How do I get more organic traffic to my website?

More organic traffic comes from three things done in order. The site has to be readable to search engines and AI assistants, its pages have to answer the questions buyers ask in their own words, and outside sources have to vouch for the business. The same work serves Google and the assistants. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. None of it is free. It costs time, writing, developer hours and patience. It also starts with a dated baseline, so you can see what moved.

We call this work AI visibility. This page maps it. Each section links to the page that goes deeper, and the problem pages start from the symptom you can see.

This table lists the parts of the work, what each one means and where to go deeper.

Where organic traffic comes from today

Search results

Search results send a visit when your page ranks for a search and the searcher clicks. Search Console shows every click and impression by page and query. Its Performance report goes back 16 months.

AI answers that link to sources

Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode link to supporting pages. Google counts that traffic inside the Web search type in Search Console. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude search the web with their own crawlers and link to the pages they use. GA4 groups visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot into a default channel called AI Assistant. We read both for every site we measure.

Why AI answers can reduce clicks for some searches

When the answer sits on the results page, fewer people click. SparkToro, working from Similarweb's US panel, found that 68 percent of Google searches from January to April 2026 ended without a click. Short factual questions are the easiest to settle on the page. Comparisons, prices, tools, local services and detailed guides still give people a reason to visit.

Step one: make the site readable

Access for search and AI crawlers

Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI search crawlers must be able to fetch your pages. The AI search crawlers include OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. A robots.txt rule or a firewall setting meant for training crawlers can stop them too. Our free scan checks eight AI crawler names against your robots.txt on every run.

Index coverage

A page Google has not indexed cannot rank. Google's AI features need a page that is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. An unindexed page cannot be one of their supporting links. The Page indexing report in Search Console lists every page Google left out, with its reason.

Google can keep reading an old copy of a sitemap index. It then misses every page published after that copy, and no error warns you. A fresh submission in Search Console fixes it. We check every day that Google has the current copy of every sitemap we list.

Text that exists before JavaScript runs

Google handles JavaScript pages in three phases: crawling, rendering and indexing. Text that appears only after rendering depends on that extra step. In July 2026 we set out to measure 350 non ecommerce websites, and 47 produced no score. Most of them had heavy bot protection or a homepage built only in JavaScript.

Step two: answer the questions buyers ask

Finding the questions from Search Console, sales calls and forums

The best questions come from your own records. Look at searches that already bring impressions in Search Console. Read the questions from sales calls and support emails. Note the wording people use in forums and reviews. We planned this part of our own site the same way. Search Console, Bing, forums and competitor pages came first. The writing came after.

One page per distinct question or problem

Write one page for each distinct question or problem. Do not write one page per wording of the same question. Google says that pages made mainly to manipulate rankings or generative AI answers violate its scaled content abuse policy.

Step three: earn outside support

Links and mentions that are earned, not bought

Links and mentions come from people who find the business useful. Partners, customers and the trade press are the usual sources. So are associations and the directories of your field. Buying links breaks Google's spam policies. We would rather see one real mention in a trade publication than a page of paid ones.

Consistent business facts across profiles

Use one name, one description and the same address on your site, in your markup and on every profile. We fixed our own version of this problem on September 24, 2026. Why ChatGPT and other assistants never mention your company tells that story.

Set a dated baseline before you change anything

Branded and nonbranded clicks

In the Performance report, filter out the searches that contain your brand name. Record branded and nonbranded clicks and impressions separately, with the dates. Growth in nonbranded searches means new people found you.

Pages with impressions

Record how many pages received at least one impression in the period. A rising count means Google shows more of your site for more questions.

AI referral visits

Record GA4 sessions in the AI Assistant channel, filtered to your own hostname. Record the Generative AI performance report in Search Console as well. Google rolled that report out to every site on August 31, 2026. The AI Assistant channel excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which Search Console counts under Web search. The baseline, 90 day plan and measurement workbook lays the numbers out week by week.

What organic growth costs

Time, writing, developer hours and patience

Organic traffic is never free. We will not pretend it is. It costs the hours of whoever writes, fixes and measures. Search engines and assistants also recrawl on their own schedules, so it takes time. The visits it earns do not stop the day a budget runs out. Read whether SEO costs money, traffic to an online store without ads and spending less on marketing for the cost side.

When paid ads still make sense

Ads make sense for a launch, a season, a test of demand or a product with no search history yet. They buy visibility on the day you need it. Organic AI visibility vs paid ads compares the two, and the 90 day AI visibility plan turns the choice into a schedule.

The other problem pages cover narrower symptoms.

  • Why ChatGPT and other assistants never mention your company covers absence from AI answers.
  • Why ChatGPT and Perplexity send you almost no traffic covers AI referrals that never arrive.
  • Why indexed pages do not show up for anything covers pages Google keeps and never shows.
  • Why a service business does not show up for the service it provides covers service searches.
  • Why blog posts get no traffic, and what to do with them covers articles nobody reads.
  • Why competitors rank above you when your site is better covers the authority gap.
  • You did everything SEO asks and nothing moved: why that happens covers the clean audit that changed nothing.
  • Why most of your traffic comes from countries you do not sell to covers visitors you cannot serve.

What results to expect and when

The growth window and why it depends on the site history

Google says some changes take effect in a few days and others take several months. It says a medium sized site can take a few weeks to be recrawled after a move. OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its systems. How fast your numbers move depends on the site's history. Its age, the traffic it already has, the pages Google indexes and the links it has earned all play a part.

We record that history beside every measurement. In Monthly AI Visibility Management we rescan every month at the same depth, and each monthly performance report is drafted from those measurements and approved by Margareta before it is sent. We describe any rise as associated with the work, since search engines and assistants also change on their own. Nobody can promise a ranking for a named search or a mention in a named assistant, and we do not.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to see results from SEO and AI search work?

It depends on the site's history and on what is holding it back. A technical block that is removed can show in Search Console once the pages are recrawled. Gains that depend on new content or authority take longer, and Google says some changes take several months to show. The history decides much of the pace. We record domain age, earlier traffic, indexed pages and earned links beside every measurement. Each week is compared with a dated baseline.

How do I get more qualified traffic instead of just more visitors?

Target the searches people make when they are choosing, not only when they are learning. Those include comparisons and questions about price. They include questions that name a problem your offer solves. Searches that name a place or a type of customer count too. Build pages that answer those searches with the facts a buyer needs. Link your informational articles to them. Judge the work by visits to commercial pages and by leads, not by total sessions.

How do I get customers from search without paying for ads?

You earn them by being the useful answer when they search. That costs time and work instead of a price per click. Make sure search engines and AI assistants can read your site. Publish pages that answer the questions your customers ask before they buy. Describe your business the same way on the profiles and directories in your field, and ask customers for reviews. Organic acquisition is not free, since it needs content, fixes and upkeep. The visits it brings do not stop the day a budget runs out.

Is it risky to depend only on Google for traffic?

Yes, it is. One company's changes can cut your traffic without any change on your site. Google itself lists algorithmic updates and shifts in search interest among the causes of traffic drops. Spreading discovery across Google, Bing, AI assistants, email and referrals from other sites reduces that risk. Much of the groundwork is shared. Pages that search engines can read and that answer real questions are also the pages AI assistants and other sites can use.

What can a business do when AI answers reduce its clicks from search?

Shift effort toward searches where a visit still adds something, and toward being named inside the answers. SparkToro found that 68 percent of US Google searches from January to April 2026 ended without a click. Short factual questions are the easiest to settle on the results page. Comparisons, prices, tools, local services and detailed guides still send visits. Make your pages the sources those answers cite. Watch branded searches, since readers of an answer may search for you by name later. Report leads from search as well as clicks.

When is the right time to hire help for search and AI visibility?

Hire help when the cost of not being found is clearly larger than the fee, and you know what you want fixed. Steady demand that your site does not capture is a good sign. So is a drop you cannot explain, or a list of fixes nobody on your team has time to make. It is too early when the business has no clear offer or website yet. It is also too early when nobody can give the provider access and approvals. We would start with a scan, so the first paid hour goes to the right problem.

How can we tell whether SEO and AI search will work for us before we invest?

We would check demand, gaps and competition. Bing Webmaster Tools keyword research and Search Console impressions show whether people search for what you sell. A scan shows whether search engines and AI crawlers can read your site. Your own page list shows whether you answer those searches. The current results show who wins today and whether you could give a better answer. If all three look promising, start small. Set a dated scope and a baseline, and judge the result in weeks.

How soon will I see results in AI after I fix my website?

The first signs can come within days, and the rest depends on each system's crawling. OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search. Google says crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months. A mention in an answer also depends on the sources the assistant chooses, which nobody outside controls. Record a dated baseline before the fix. Then compare the Generative AI performance report and your AI Assistant sessions week by week.
