What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often and how accurately AI assistants and AI search features find a business, describe it and name or cite it when people ask questions the business can answer.

Any business whose buyers research before they buy needs it, whether those buyers ask Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot. For Google, most of the work is SEO, and Google says so itself. Its guide to generative AI features, last updated July 10, 2026, says AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in the same core ranking and quality systems as Search. Assistants outside Google fetch the web with their own crawlers or search partners. That is where the extra work sits.

I hold CISA and CISSP certifications, so I read this subject the way an auditor reads a control. A statement that a website is visible to AI proves nothing on its own. The evidence is what a crawler receives when it asks for a page, and that is the first thing our scanner reads.

What AI visibility means

The definition covers two different things. The first is how an assistant talks about the business: whether it mentions it, how it describes it and which competitors it names beside it. Buyers also meet this part under the names AI brand visibility and LLM visibility.

The second is whether the website itself can be read. Can an AI system reach the pages and read them without guessing? A business controls this part directly, and Visibility Mesh calls it AI legibility. AI legibility is how cleanly a machine can read, parse and trust a website, and it is what our scan measures.

Other names cover the same ground. AEO stands for answer engine optimization, and GEO stands for generative engine optimization, a term that comes from a 2023 research paper. People also say LLMO or AI search visibility for the same work. Google's own guide names AEO and GEO and says that, from Google Search's perspective, the work is still SEO. The comparison of SEO, AEO and GEO sets the terms side by side, and the glossary keeps the short versions.

How AI visibility differs from SEO, and where the two overlap

SEO is about ranking in a list of results. AI visibility is about whether an assistant names the business, or cites its page, inside an answer it writes itself. The two share a floor. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before AI Overviews or AI Mode can use it as a supporting link. A page that Google cannot index is missing from Google's AI answers as well. Outside Google there is more to check, since each assistant runs its own crawler and each crawler has to be let in.

What AI search is and which systems count

AI search is the everyday name for search that answers in AI written text and links to the sources it used. The systems below are the ones buyers use most for research, and each one reaches websites in its own way.

What each platform documents about how it reaches websites. Sources read on September 26, 2026 and listed at the end of this page.
System How it reaches websites What a site owner can check
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Pages retrieved from the Google Search index by Google's core ranking systems Indexing, snippet eligibility and the Search generative AI setting in Search Console
ChatGPT search OAI-SearchBot, plus rewritten queries sent to partner search providers OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt, and OpenAI's published IP addresses allowed by the host or CDN
Perplexity PerplexityBot for search, and Perplexity-User for fetches a person asks for PerplexityBot allowed in robots.txt and in any web application firewall
Microsoft Copilot Grounded in web search results for some conversations, with linked citations The AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, which counts Copilot citations
Claude with web search Claude-SearchBot for search, and Claude-User for fetches a person asks for Both allowed in robots.txt
Gemini apps Links to sources, including public websites, when sources are available Not documented in the help page we read

For Google, read Google AI Mode and appearing in Google AI Overviews. For the other assistants, read how to get your website to show up in ChatGPT, Copilot and Bing, Perplexity Shopping, how Grok finds stores and how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini find a store.

The four layers of the work

AI visibility work has four layers. The first three sit on the website, and the fourth sits everywhere else. We work on them in that order. If a crawler cannot get in, nothing written for the later layers gets read.

Can AI crawlers reach the site?

The robots.txt file works like a written policy: it says which crawlers are welcome. The firewall or CDN in front of the site is the control that decides who gets in, and it can refuse a crawler that robots.txt invited. Auditors call that a paper control, and they do not mean it kindly. OpenAI and Perplexity both tell site owners to allow their published IP addresses as well as their robots.txt entries. Read the AI crawler access gates, the AI crawler user agents and crawling, rendering and indexing for the checks.

Do the pages state facts plainly?

A crawler that gets in still has to find the facts in the page as it is served. Prices, specifications, policies and what the business does belong in the HTML text, with structured data that matches what a visitor sees. In our July 2026 study of 303 non ecommerce websites, thin structured data and a missing FAQ block made up 54.4 percent of the 11,633 findings. See structured data, writing so AI can quote you and linking products, collections and articles.

Is the business identity consistent across the site and its profiles?

An assistant has to be sure that the company on the website, the company in a directory and the company in a review are the same one. The name, the address, the founders and the products should read the same way everywhere. In our study of 216 Shopify storefronts, scanned on June 28, 2026, 72 percent failed Entity Integrity, which means they earned less than half of its points. Entity Integrity is the part of our score that checks brand and product facts in machine readable form. Entity optimization covers the fixes.

Do outside sources confirm what the site says?

Google says its generative AI features can show what is being said about products and services across the web, including blogs, videos and forum discussions. It also says that seeking inauthentic mentions does not help as much as people hope. Reviews, press, comparisons and directory listings are earned slowly, by customers and editors who choose to write them. The AI citation footprint article covers where to start.

The four layers of AI visibility, with the page that goes deeper and the terms buyers use for each.
Layer The question it answers Go deeper Related terms
Access Can AI crawlers fetch the pages? AI crawler access gates AI crawler access, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot
Content and structure Can a machine find the facts in the page? Structured data AI legibility, schema markup
Identity Is the business the same everywhere? Entity optimization Entity integrity, entity SEO
Outside confirmation Do other sources back the claims? AI citation footprint AI citations, digital PR

What a business can check on its own and what needs help

An owner can check a lot in an afternoon. I would start with the robots.txt file, since it is the quickest check. Open it and read which crawlers it names. View the source of a product or service page and search for the price and the main claim in the text. Open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console and the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. Ask two or three assistants the questions your buyers ask, more than once, and write down what they say. The guide to checking whether AI can read your website walks through each step.

Some fixes need a developer: firewall and CDN rules, pages that only render in the browser, and structured data that templates generate. Identity work across profiles you do not control needs patience more than code. Outside confirmation needs time and customers more than it needs a specialist.

How AI visibility is measured today

What Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools now report

Google's Generative AI performance report in Search Console shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, date and device. Google says every website has had the report since August 31, 2026. Microsoft's AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools counts citations in Copilot, in AI summaries in Bing and in some partner integrations. It lists the pages cited and a sample of grounding queries. In June 2026 Microsoft added Citation Share, which is calculated per grounding query and does not show competitor domains.

What analytics can and cannot see

GA4 now has an AI Assistant channel for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Grok. The detail most dashboards miss is in Google's own definition: that channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, which GA4 counts as Organic Search. A report that adds up only the AI Assistant channel leaves out every visit from Google's AI answers, by design.

Why one screenshot of an answer proves little

AI answers change between runs and between users, and they drift from week to week. Microsoft says citation patterns shift with user behavior, model updates, freshness and partner refresh cycles. A single screenshot is a sample of one. Ask the same fixed questions on a schedule and count, and read how to measure AI visibility for the full method.

What Visibility Mesh measures and fixes

The free scan and what it reads

The free scan reads five of your key pages the way an AI crawler receives them and scores them across five categories. Every scan checks the robots.txt rule for eight AI crawler names, each on its own: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User from OpenAI, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User from Anthropic, and PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User from Perplexity. The scan reports Google-Extended separately, since Google documents it as a control for Gemini training and grounding and not as a crawler of its own. We run the same scan on our own website and publish the score on our own score page every month. The method and the frozen studies are on the research page, next to the live benchmark.

Fixes on Shopify, and fix plans for every other platform

The scan works on any public website on any platform. On Shopify, the Visibility Mesh app on its Growth plan applies each fix after you approve it and lets you undo it. AI Visibility Setup is our done for you implementation for Shopify stores in English, sold by quote. On Shopify and WordPress we can also make the changes ourselves through Monthly AI Visibility Management. Your own developer applies our ordered fix plan on Webflow, custom sites and every other platform. The platform support page states what we do on each platform. Visibility Mesh does not control what any AI system shows, and neither does anyone else.

Questions people ask

Do we need to rebuild our website to show up in AI answers?

Most websites do not need a rebuild. Targeted changes usually cover it. Let AI search crawlers in, put important text in the page instead of loading it only with scripts, and add structured data that matches the page. State what the business does in plain words and fix the internal links. A rebuild makes sense when the platform cannot serve readable pages at all. One example is a site whose content appears only after heavy scripts run and cannot be rendered on the server. A scan shows which case you are in before anyone quotes you a rebuild.

What is AI brand visibility, and how is it different from the AI visibility of a website?

AI brand visibility is how a named brand shows up inside AI answers: whether assistants mention it, how they describe it and which competitors appear beside it. The AI visibility of a website is the earlier question of whether AI systems can read and cite its pages. The two are linked and still separate. A brand can be mentioned because of reviews and press while its own website is never cited. A readable website can also go unmentioned when other sources carry more weight for the question asked.

Why does AI visibility matter for a business?

Buyers now do more of their research inside AI answers, before they visit any website. ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 (OpenAI, February 27, 2026). Between January and April 2026, 68 percent of US Google searches ended without a click (SparkToro, June 9, 2026). When an answer is written for the buyer, the businesses named or cited in it are the ones the buyer sees first. If AI systems cannot read or trust a business, it misses that step, and that happens to businesses whose websites rank well too.

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

For Google, AI visibility is largely the same work as SEO. Google's guide says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO. AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve pages from the Search index with the same core ranking systems. Other assistants work differently. ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and sometimes sends rewritten queries to partner search providers, and Microsoft says Copilot grounds some answers in web search results. SEO is the foundation, and AI visibility adds checks that each assistant can fetch and cite the site.

How many people use ChatGPT compared with Google Search?

OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users in February 2026. Google does not publish a comparable user count for Search in the documentation we read. No platform publishes how many searches moved between the two, so any share of search figure is a third party estimate. What a single business can measure is narrower: the visits that arrive from each assistant in its analytics, and its impressions in Google's AI features in Search Console.

Should a business focus on ChatGPT or Google first?

The first steps are the same for both, so the order matters less than people expect. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. ChatGPT search needs OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and by the host or CDN. Crawler access and clear page content help both at once, and so do consistent business facts. After that, look at where buyers arrive from in your analytics and which assistant answers your category questions, and put more effort there.

Why do AI assistants cite Reddit and forums so often?

Google says its generative AI features can show what is being said about products and services across the web, including in forum discussions. A forum thread is an eligible source like any other page. No platform we read documents a preference for Reddit in particular. For a business, this means that what customers say about it in public places can shape answers. Google also says that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem. In my view, what lasts is a business that gives its customers a reason to talk about it.
