What Is an Answer Engine?
An answer engine is an AI system that responds to a question with a single synthesised answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot. It reads sources, decides, and names a result on the user's behalf, which is why being readable by one matters more than ranking on a list.
Traditional search hands the user a page of options and lets them choose. An answer engine does the choosing. Reading the field and returning a verdict. For a store, that shifts the goal from landing on a list to being the thing the machine names.
There is no second place in an answer. The engine names a store, or it doesn't. That's why legibility and trust signals decide whether you're in the answer at all.
