What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making a website and its facts easy for AI systems that write answers, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, to find, read and cite.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper. Google says that, for its own AI features, the work is still SEO. Outside Google the name earns its keep. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude each send their own crawler, and each one has to be let in.

What GEO means

GEO is one of several names for the same field. On this site we use AI visibility as the umbrella term. AI visibility is how often and how accurately AI assistants and AI search features find a business, describe it and name or cite it when people ask questions the business can answer. GEO describes the work a business does to improve that, with the website as its starting point.

No trick gets a website quoted. Most of the work is unglamorous: crawler access, pages that state their facts in plain text, structured data that matches the page, a business identity that reads the same everywhere and outside sources that confirm it. The four layers of AI visibility set out that order.

Where the term came from

The name comes from a paper titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Pranjal Aggarwal and five coauthors. It was first posted to arXiv on November 16, 2023, and the KDD 2024 conference accepted it. The authors described generative engines as systems that gather several sources and summarize them with a large language model. They tested ways a content creator could change a page so that those engines used it more often.

The paper reports gains of up to 40 percent in visibility inside generative engine responses. The authors measured that on GEO-bench, a set of queries they built for the study, with the engines of 2023. I read that figure as a research result about a benchmark. It says nothing reliable about what ChatGPT will do with your page this week.

Marketing vendors picked up the name later, and it has grown to cover far more than the paper ever tested.

GEO and the geographic meaning of geo

In most marketing, geo still means geography: geo targeted ads, geofencing and local landing pages. Searches for the bare abbreviation mix both meanings, so we spell out generative engine optimization on first use, every time. If a job post or a proposal says GEO, I would ask which one it means before signing anything.

What Google says about GEO

Google published its guide to generative AI features on May 15, 2026, and last updated it on July 10, 2026. The guide names AEO and GEO as terms people use for work focused on visibility in AI search experiences. It then says that, from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO.

Google's guide comes back to GEO in a section about what site owners can ignore. That list includes llms.txt files and other special markup, breaking content into small chunks, rewriting pages just for AI and chasing inauthentic mentions. On the same day, May 15, 2026, Google clarified that its spam policies also apply to generative AI responses in Search.

My reading is simple. For Google, do the SEO work well: crawlable pages, useful content that is not a copy of what everyone else says, and accurate business details. Google also says no third party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Remember that the next time a vendor promises otherwise.

What changes for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot

Outside Google, GEO adds checks that SEO alone does not cover, since each assistant documents its own way of reaching websites.

How each assistant reaches websites, from each company's own documentation, read on September 26, 2026.
Assistant Crawler or source What the owner should check
ChatGPT search OAI-SearchBot, plus rewritten queries sent to partner search providers OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt, and OpenAI's published IP addresses allowed by the host or CDN
Perplexity PerplexityBot for search results, and Perplexity-User for fetches a person asks for PerplexityBot allowed in robots.txt and in any web application firewall
Claude with web search Claude-SearchBot for search, and Claude-User for fetches a person asks for Both allowed in robots.txt
Microsoft Copilot Web search results, for conversations where people seek information Citations in the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools

The robots.txt file is rarely the whole story. OpenAI and Perplexity both ask site owners to allow their published IP addresses too, and a firewall that blocks those addresses overrules a welcoming robots.txt file without telling anyone. The AI crawler access gates article shows how to test each one.

GEO, AEO and SEO

The three names overlap more than their definitions suggest. SEO covers ranking in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, and GEO both describe work aimed at being used and cited in AI written answers. In practice they describe the same work under two names. The comparison of SEO, AEO and GEO sets the terms side by side.

Questions people ask

Where did the term generative engine optimization come from?

The term comes from a research paper titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Pranjal Aggarwal and five coauthors. It was first posted to arXiv on November 16, 2023 and accepted to the KDD 2024 conference. The paper described generative engines as systems that gather several sources and summarize them with a large language model. It tested ways content creators could change their pages to be used more often in those answers. Marketing vendors adopted the name afterward, and it now covers much broader work than the paper studied.

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

For Google Search, Google says it is. Its guide states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and so it is still SEO. The name adds something for other assistants. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude each run their own search crawler, and Copilot answers some questions from web search results. GEO work checks access, clarity and outside confirmation for each of them. I treat GEO as SEO carried to more places that write answers, with no special tactics of its own.

What does GEO mean in marketing, since it also means geography?

In AI search marketing, GEO means generative engine optimization: work that helps AI systems such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot find, understand and cite a business. In most other marketing it means geographic, as in geo targeted ads, geofencing or local landing pages. The two meanings get mixed up in searches and job posts, so spell out generative engine optimization the first time you use it. Visibility Mesh does that in its own writing.

Can GEO tactics get my website penalized by Google?

Some GEO tactics can. Google's guide warns against creating a separate page for every variation of how people might ask, including fan out queries. Doing that mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses violates its scaled content abuse spam policy. Google clarified on May 15, 2026 that its spam policies apply to generative AI responses in Search. It also says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem. Ordinary GEO work, such as crawlable pages and clear, sourced facts, is the same work Google recommends for Search.
